A lot of truth in that. I have seen and heard of more people screwing up with a 300 mag whatever. I hunt deer with a 243 win and 87 gr bullet. I have been told many times that it is too light of a bullet and you need at least "whatever". I am the odd duck I prefer a lighter faster bullet.

Just got one the other night. Approximately 2400 lb. projectile travelling around 67 ft. / sec. Instantaneous kill.

I have gotten small deer with Chiappa Mares leg in 357 I'm not a fan but not for the same reason as others on hear
I found the 357 was to much gun on are small deer and wasted a lot of meat I might try 38 special next time
Most guys wear I live use 30-06 (head shot ) and the reach for longer shoots on the beach
Growing up poor we used a 22lr if a kid can cleanly kill deer with just a 22lr a 357 will work you will be handicapping yourself in Open country
For a spot and stock hunt and in thick bush a 357 is a good round at 22lr distance and will kill cleanly
I took out a 444 Marlen out once and made a broadside hit on a small deer it totally destroyed over half the deer I would never use 444 Marlen on Haida Gwaii deer
if I was to use 357 it would be head shot to save on meat damage
I'm not a expert on big deer just a bit of my experience with 357
