I knew this round was a revolver killer but were there any rifles so chambered? I came across a bag of 250 new cases and it got me wondering.
Could a single shot 357mag chamber just be lengthened?

Very easy to run a reamer into a 357 magnum barrel on a single shot. I have a 357 Rem max in a contender barrel. I like it. Still doing some experimenting with loads. I would like to see a lever in it but too long for pistol carbines and too short for rifle carbines. And not enough people want the rifle cartridge combo. Not all that common.

A 357max in a CVA scout would be neat. Ballistically it would be near identical to 350Legend, but without having to worry about headspacing on the case mouth - and I for one don't have much love for rifles that headspace on the case mouth.

I once owned a Savage 24V in .357max/20 ga. and also a TC Contender carbine with a custom Bullberry barrel in .357 max. Never shot any large game with either, but my handloads with Speer 180 gr. FP bullets were the eqivalent of .30-30 in power and were accurate too. I mostly used mine for plinking with .38 special loads, which shot accurately. But regular .357 magnum loads shot poorly in both rifles. I had to use the longer brass for hunting loads.

I've been waiting for a 360bhmr from cva.
Heads pacing on the mouth is way I kinda lost interest in the 400lgnd

Let me know when you do.

I made two .357 Maximum rifles... one was a rechambered .357 Mag SB2 Handi rifle and the other was a Ruger No.1 Highway Patrol... eventually sold them both, it is a niche cartridge and really didn't make much sense for my purposes, my kids took a couple deer with them and I shot a late season doe one year. Sold them both off long ago.

Does that present any problems if a guy keeps the case length to spec, and doesn't put a roll crimp that Popeye would envy?

Sorry for the derail.
Nope. You've already identified the two most common potential issues with headspacing on the case mouth.

But with a rimmed case I don't have to be nearly as concerned about those things, and rimmed cartridges just make sense for break action guns - I have a Henry Single Shot in 243win, and it's possible to push the cartridge past the extractor if you're trying to go fast. With a rimmed cartridge that's much harder to do.

Exactly why I liked rimmed rounds in break actions. Plus it just feels right that way
I'm waiting for a 360bhmr so I don't think I'm going to pursue a 357 maximum.
