what cartridge does the 357 in a lever compare to for power out to 100m.?

Is it any where near a 30-30?
how do these calibres stack up, 32-20- 357.

Compared to my 375 BB also?

Would it be a cheap plinker able to take fallow deer in close?

The .357 has the advantage over a .32-20 in that it can be loaded with heavier bullets, but I consider it inferior to the .30/30 or the .44 magnum. It could be considered a minimalist deer cartridge for short range use, and probably ideal for coyote sized game. It is probably best compared to the old and now obsolete .35 WSL and .351 Winchester auto rifle cartridges, about the same as the .35 WSL an a bit less than the .351. Find a good heavy for caliber WFN or SWC hard cast bullet to achieve the best big game terminal performance, I load 190 gr SWCs at 1150 in my ATC gun.
 
How big are these deer?? A hard cast swc would probably go throught 2 or 3 of these deer lol. I have always been happy with speer gold dot HP ammo for light game like deer(we arn't talking warthogs here) probably 158 grain would be alright.
 
well 357 mag has around 1300 to 1400 ft/lbs at the muzzle, 30-30 has 1800-2000 ft/lbs at the muzzle. if your going for deer i would take the 44 mag its is very similar to 30-30 and a lot of fun. but if your going to be shooting alot and you dont reload go with 357.
 
I would have no worries about taking my .357 Magnum lever action after fallow deer, within a 100 yards or so. I have used cast 158 grain SWC successfully on deer, and plan to use some Hornady 158 gr XTP this coming year.
 
I use my 357 Marlin 1994CB for cowboy shooting mostly. In the fall, I decided to shoot small caliber silhouette with my cowboy loads. (4 gr unique, 147 gr RN) zipping out a pistol barrel at about 800 fps and the rifle at about 1,100 or so.

Let me say, I was very impressed. With the light loads, that thing shot pretty straight, with lots of oomph to knock down the 100 yd piggy with authority.

I dunno about deer, but with a full load, and heavier bullet, should be sufficient for deer at closer range.

Myself, if I were wanting to hunt with the lever, I would use the 30-30. The ballistics are much better for those just a bit longer than 100 yards, but under 200.
 
buffalo bore claims 2150 fps for their 158 grain load out of a rifle. Handloading should be able to approach this with one of the newer powders, like lil-gun.

His favorite load is a hornady 180gr XTP at over 1800 fps. Point blank range of +/- 2.5" is 150 yards, where it is still moving along at 1360fps. That is about what you would get from a revolver at the muzzle with 158gr bullets. How do you think such a revolver load would deal with a deer at 5 yards?

The .30-30 wouldgive very similar results with a 170gr bullet out of a 16" barrel. The .375, however, is a different kettle of fish.

I would have no problem using that 180gr XTP load on deer out to 150 yards.
 
Cheers, after this thread i done some Researching... Rifle in 357 arnt really as cheap as i thought i could pick one up for...
but yeah it seems the 357 is less superiour to the 375 buy a fair racket.
if i did go down this path i wouldnt shoot more than 100yards, would be more used for Fallow deer hunting in the Rut, where calling them in close is the go
 
I don't believe that they are avail. here but, it would be pretty easy to reload them to that level with heavy, gas checked cast bullets. I think that the .357 is a very good varmint gun, but not so good on deer, the 30/30 has quite a bit more power.

My .357 load for a Pedersoli Rolling Block Baby Carbine (20" barrel)chronographs at 1910 fps with a 158 grain Remington SP bullet. Haven't chronographed that load out of my 16" "trapper" yet.
I'd be very confident in using that load and the Rolling Block at up to 100 yds.
 
I still find it funny that every gun mag out there has done issuses on hunting with handguns and all have come to the same conclusion that out to 100 yrds. 357 is perfect for deer & the .44 mag is great for b. bears as well.But put in a carbine rifle with much better power/energy a huge debate errupts and with all that much more power they are now insuffcient .... don't get it.
