While I've been going through the waiting process of getting my RPAL, I decided I might as well do my homework and figure out what to buy once my license comes in. From everyone I've talked to, and the many posts here, it seems you can't go wrong with a Glock.
I made my decision and snagged myself a used Glock 31c as my first restricted :dancingbanana:
Anyone else shoot .357sig? What are your impressions? I already know that ammo availability is an issue and I might look into reloading later on down the road. The short bottlenecked cartridge is a little intimidating though.
I've read elsewhere that they're a little louder and snappier than most 9mm or .40s&w, any basis to that claim?

Very nice pistol. If it's the same one that was in the EE that I was thinking of, that was a pretty decent deal as well.

I love(ed) the .357 Sig. It is, IMHO the "best" all-in-one handgun cartridge (consider factory ammo). It is hard to find and a little pricey, but it's well worth it.

It's much snappier then 9mm. A little snappier then 40SW and it's about on par with slightly downloaded 10mm. The ports will help with the felt recoil.

All in all, nice grab.

One of my favourite cartridges, love the .357Sig. Definitely worth reloading for. More than just availability, the price of factory ammo is also an issue. It's a bit trickier to reload than straight-walled pistol cartridges, but you eventually get the hang of it.

I've heard some people say otherwise, but in my experience, the cartridge is very loud and feels quite powerful without as much felt recoil as .40S&W or .45ACP, due to the small bullet size. You'll definitely get weird looks from the guy next to you if you shoot indoors.

An interesting cartridge for sure, too bad you bought a Glock though.;)

But it is NOT a 10mm Auto.

Most FACTORY .357 Sig (125 grain) is 1350 FPS and 550+ ft lbs at the muzzle

Most FACTORY 10mm (180 grain) is 1150 FPS & 550+ ft lbs at the muzzle

While I agree that handloaded 10mm is more powerful then handloaded 357 Sig, when your comparing factory ammo V. factory ammo, they are pretty well equal, which IMHO, is quite impressive.

Some factory 10mm (Federal, for example) is only 1050 FPS and 480+ ft lbs at the muzzle.

At least if your shooting factory .357 Sig ammo, your getting your monies worth, which CANNOT be said with almost all 10mm.

There are reasons people call the .40 SW (Short and Weak). The 357 SIG cartridge is based on this design, using a .40 SW case, necked down to accept a 9mm bullet.

If you want to check out some real power 9mm bullets then check out the 9X25 Dillon. It is a necked down 10mm cartridge to accept the same 9mm bullet.

To be completely fair it puts the 357SIG, and several others to shame in terms of speed, knock down power, and penetration. Just check out these specs for factory ammo (not available in Canada currently)

125gr JHP: 1700 fps with 800+ ft.lbs of energy
90gr JHP: 2100 fps with 880+ ft.lbs of energy

I own a Glock 20 and already have match grade .40 SW, .357 SIG barrels, and will be getting the 9X25 barrel as soon as I can afford it.

Now that's power.

I don'r mean to poo poo your piece. I've seen a couple of the 'C' model glocks and they are all great pistols, and the .357 SIG is certainly alot of fun to shoot.

Glad to see you are a part of the sport.

It's not a viable semi-auto cartridge. There's a reason why 9x25 isn't carried by LE

I've tried the .357 SIG and it was great. Certainly the best Glock I've ever shot and the most fun. Super accurate and I like the snap it has to it. It is very loud but not as loud as as the 10mm. Still be prepared to set up at a stall far away from other shooters. The compensator really helps a lot with follow up shots. I found it more accurate than all the other Glocks I've tried. Enjoy!

Since when do we consider what is or is not a viable cartridge solely based on what law enforcement uses?

It's a reloader for sure since you can't buy factory ammo in Canada, but it is available in the US from Double Tap.

There is small but determined following for this cartridge, and it's not the IPSC group.

All I'm saying is that it will be a blast to shoot, especially when you think that you are capable of moving a 90gr bullet over 2000fps out of a 6" barrel. That's rifle territory.

My $0.02

Oh, I agree. 9x25 Dillion would be pretty cool to shoot.

I just don't really understand why it was created or for what purpose.

Power in a semi-auto? 180 grain 10mm @ 1350 FPS should do the trick. Power overall? Well, I can move into revolvers and shoot either .44 Mag or .500SW, both of which would kick the snot out of 9x25.

Thanks for the responses guys, it's nice to hear that there are many good opinions/ experiences with this caliber. I initially figured I'd just shoot .40s&w and save the 357 stuff for when I wanted something "exotic" to play around with, who knows I may still end up doing that.

Cerdan, you're absolutely right! I called around to a few places just to see about factory ammo availability and the places that DO have some in stock want an awful lot of money for it. Average in my local area is roughly $32 for 50 rounds  Maybe theres somewhere else I can find it cheaper.
If any of you guys were shooting on a regular basis, were you shooting factory or reloads?

Jawsman, :agree: that 10mm and 9x25 Dillon would also be a hoot!
Targettarget, thanks for the great info on the comparision of some factory 10mm to factory 357sig. To be quite honest, I had no idea that 10mm factory loads were so close to factory 357. I'm impressed!

Great info and insight into this subject guys, I appreciate it :dancingbanana:
