I am just wondering if anyone has any experience using jacket pistol bullets ina .358 Winchester. I have some 180 grain HP/XTP bullets I want o plink with at the range. Any loads would be appreciated. I have one suggestion of 42 grains of H4895 as a light plinking load. Any ideas would be apprecieted with a COL as I cannot find any load listed only for 158 gr's. Does anyone think the recomended load of 42 grains of H4895 with aWin WLR primer would lead to over pressure situations as I have been advised its really light or even be dangerous.

As long as it chambers it should be fine. I would just seat to the cannalure (I believe all XTP bullets have one) and make sure it chambers properly.

I've heard of it being done successfully in .35 Rem but have not looked into .358 Win.
 
Why not try a "full to the base of the bullet" load of Trail Boss with that bullet?
I figure the velocity should be in the 1500 fps. range which should get impressive
results on a big watermelon or a full 4 liter milk jug of water.

For real laughs, try 38 gr. of 4198 with a 110 gr. Speer HP. El Explodo! :D
 
sounds good but want to look for a load with powders I have (Varget,748,H4350,4895,H4831,Superperformance) I looked in Hornady Manual but there are no load but when I email them they said I can use the miniumum load for the 180 SP listed. There is a load for VV n130 powder of 42.7 listed and H4895 is very close to it on the burn charts which makes me think it should be ok.

I tried to reload all ammo with as few powders as possible to ended up with H4831 and H4895. Once I started dabbling in weird loads, reduced loads, and cast bullets I realized you really need to expand available powders for it to work.

For lighter-than-intended bullets your best bet is to go with the same powders used by cast bullet loaders. When looking at loads for putting .32ACP bullets in .303 British for light loads all the powders mentioned everywhere I looked where the same powders cast bullet loaders used like Trail Boss, SR-4759, and shotgun powders like Unique and Bluedot.

Hmmm.... 180gr isn't lighter-than-intended for .358 Win as its normal bullet weight range is 180-200gr anyway. My bad.

The problem is what are the gaps between the different powders? Are they standard amounts? I would doubt it.

The burn rate chart just tells you which powders burn faster or slower than others. Not by how much faster or slower they burn. The burn rates between two powders could be twice or five times the difference between another two but both sets are right beside each other in the chart. Without some sort of numerical value there is no way to tell how close two powders really are.
 
From the Hodgdon load data site for 180gr bullets:
44.0 to 48.0 grains of H4895
47.0 to 51.0 grains of Varget

Their data is for Barnes X bullets which in my experience tend to have lighter loads than lead core bullets anyway. Starting at the starting loads should be quite safe with any 180gr bullet and just work it up.

As for COL anything that chambers and doesn't compress the powder overly would work. For best accuracy you would have to experiment.
 
I've never had a problem reducing the minimums by 5-10% and I would probably start at 40-42 grains if I was worried about pressure with an odd projectile. Personally so long as it's a modern gun from a good manufacturer I would load up some test rounds at 44 grains and just check the first case that was extracted.
 
I will load some up and give it try just want to use up these 180 XTP after this will settle on 158 gr jacket pistol bullets for fun as there are many loads for them and they really scream out of the barrel so should be great for plinking, pumpkins and water jugs and might even try them for varmints. It really suprrises me how versatile the .358 Win is.
