what milsurp would be equivilent to a 35 whelen? Is there anything around like the venerable 303,or 6.5 X55 Swede,in terms of value, quality and ammunition availability?Bubba is fine by me-this would be a shooter-not a collector

anything in 9mm that would qualify?[I'm not sure of my mm-calibre equivilents]

35 Whelen is 9mm, and no, there are no milsurps that satisfy your criteria better than the 8x57.

If it must be 35 Whelen, then you should just buy a used one.

9.3x57 is closest ballistically, but the 8x57 (.323) is close enough. Load up the 200 grain Accubond and go to 'er, it's the equal of the Whelen unless you're going after really big bears.

PLUS, 8x57 components are cheap and available, as are rifles chambered for it. Pick up a sporter 98 and enjoy;-)

consider the 30-06 with 200-220 gr bullets - same case, same bullet wts as the lighter whelen bullets, very available caliber, but you might have to handload, don't think anyone is loading the old 220 grain loads anymore.

I am pretty sure Remington still loads a 220 gr. Core Lokt. I still see them all over the place.
Now back to the original thread...

I don't reload-how available is ammunition for the various 9.3's?

Realistically - it's not. There are manufacturers, and there are importers, but you aren't going into Wally world and buying ammo for your 9.3 anything anytime soon. I have heard rumours of both Federal and Hornady starting to produce 9.3x62 ammo at various times, but haven't seen any as of yet. - dan

I'm just surprised-given the efficiency of a 35 whelen,it isn't more popular as a hunting cartridge.I haven't even heard a lot about the 35 magnum which seems to be to the 35 whelen what the .260 is to the 65x55
