Hello All,

I have been using 236 grain Speers out of my Ruger #1; I am now showing success with them once I have learned to control the gun :). I was reading here, and other places, that these bullets are only for deer, so I need a different bullet for moose. I was wondering what would be your recommendations for a good moose bullet; the lighter the better to give me the best trajectory possible , and to reduce recoil

I'm assuming that you have a 375 H&H mag...

When I used to own one I loaded either 235gr Barnes XLC's and 300gr Partitions. I shot a lot of animals with the 300gr Partitions and my buddy took the rifle to Africa and shot 6 animals there with the 235gr ones.

I would recommend either the 235gr Barnes XCL's or the 260gr Nosler Accubond's for moose hunting.

Now that I sold that rifle to my buddy and replaced it with a 375 RUM that I shot a very large moose with last year with the 260's and was very pleased with their performance.

I have load data for the 235gr XCL's if your interested in this data send me a PM......
 
I'd have confidence in the new 235 grain Barnes TSX. Should punch as deep as a 270-300 gr. standard bullet, which should be plenty! Great speed too, 2800+ fps

I was looking for a lighter, deer bullet to use in my 375Magnum. I contacted Speer and asked specifically about the 235s. They replied, telling me that the 235 has a thinner jacket and was designed for smaller, deer sized animal. I wouldn't use it for moose.

Those Hornadys seem to be working well for WhyNot! I'd start with them or a Partition.

I don't know why Speer wouldn't make a 375cal/270gr SP comparable to their 35cal/250gr SP or 30cal/200gr SP. :confused: :confused:

Or for that matter like the excellent Magtip bullet they make in the 350/.416.
 
It looks like those 270gr Hornady spitzers worked very well. I've recently acquired a custom made 375 H&H:D that I'm starting to reload for. Just wondering, is there any particular bullet, weight and powder combination that really 'shines' as far as accuracy is concerned? I was in Edmonton last week and picked up some Hornady 300gr RN IB & 300gr BTSP to 'play' ;) with. The Speer 270gr BT Spitz-SP, Sierra 250gr SBT & 300gr SBT look interesting.:)
 
Should point out that those 270 gr Hornadys are the Interlock bullet, not their earlier bullets which behaved like a grenade.

67 gr of 4895 will get you 2600 fps, same trajectory as the 30-06, and the performance pictured above. :)

You mentioned the Hornady 270gr bullets are Interlock. Question, what is the difference between Interlock & Interbond?:confused: I picked some of each. The Interbond cost quite a bit more and the jacket looks almost gold in colour vs the copper colour of Interlock.

The Interlock is just an ordinary cup and core bullet with a ring inside the jacket, below the cannelure, that is designed to keep the core from slipping. The old bullets did not have this and really came unglued quickly and violently.

The Interbond has the core actually fused to the jacket, rather than a mechanical lock like the ring.

When I get my new 375 H*&H, I'll be loading Accubonds and X bullets.

Hornady 300GR BTSP are very accurate. I always used 300gr Partitions for hunting, as they seem to perform nicely.:)

Uhh... yeah, and I probably woudl have if someone showed up wiht a nice Ruger action..

But someoen showed up with a nice Mdl 70 action chambered for 7STW, so it's pre fitted for the 375 H&H, anyway:)

And I like the 375 H&H, no reason to not build one. No case forming crap, anyway...:)
