Hello, my new Ruger African arrived today and I really do like this rifle. However, I was less than impressed with the factory rings. I have a fair amount of experience truing up rings and no matter what I tried, I can not quite get these Ruger rings trued.

When I first laid my scope on the rings, I noticed they were not quite squared. So I would back off the main mounting screw until I could wiggle the ring until the scope sat square. As soon as I would tighten up the large screw, the ring would torque or turn uneven again!

Even my steel alignment pointed rods confirm what I could see with my naked eye. Is this normal of Ruger factory rings? You would think that one should be able to simply lay the rings on the rifle and tighten the main screw and the rings should be trued? Any help would be appreciated as I am really thinking about buying some Warne QR rings from Brownells. Has anyone else had experience or problems with Ruger rings truing up properly? Thanks.

Are the little flanges on the rings lined up wiht the little grooves in the reciever?:)

I've never had what you describe, although I have lapped Ruger rings.

Yes, the little flanges plop right into the grooves as they are meant to. I just find that when I tighten them up, the points on my alignment rods will not stay together. I have never had this happen before. But then again, I've never played with these Ruger rings before. Either way, I'll just keep playing with it or order the Warne QR rings that I really want.

For the record, the rifle is sweet!

I have lapped the rings on all the M77's I have had. They have all been a little out. I have swapped rings around between rifles and found the receivers are usually the culprit, but the rings ain't that great either. It's a ridiculously strong set up but needs a bit if fine turning with a lapping rod to make things square.

I also have a set of Warne QD that crapped out, the screws snapped, this was on a 416 Rigby.

Ruger rings are a very good design very poorly executed....the bores are not even machined,..merely popped out of the investment casting mould and polished...
they really should be mounted and line bored....
Millet makes a nice set of windage adjustable rings to fit Rugers....
