HI guys

So I have a 375 Ruger coming. I am tossing around scope ideas. Most people use 375s when its up close and personal so low power is a must. I intend of using this rifle for everything. coyotes, deer, black bear, moose, grizzly, I may also drag it on a mountain goat hunt or blast a gopher or 2. Shots will be out to 300 yrds as that's my comfort zone but once I get to shooting the 375 Ruger I will have a better idea with that specific rifle. I know many people will question it but ohwell. I also will be using QD rings and fully intend on using them when the weather is nasty, in dense brush or approaching downed game.

What would you recommend?
I have been tossing around the 2.5-8x36 Leupold.

1.75-6, 1,5-5 VX3's, would also be good choices. I have a trijicon 1-4 with the green post for a reticle, I really like it for out to 300yds. It's not a bench scope, but if you match the target to the scope it works very well. Very quick target acquisition, bright, and a true 1x on the low end.

This. Normally I'm a big fan of the 1.5-5x Leupold but it you want to have a bit more power this is the way to go. I used a 3-9x Trijicon in Zimbabwe and while I wasn't overly impressed with the scope or the reticle I found the power range appropriate for the type of hunting we were doing. The only time I wished for something different was when we were creeping through the undergrowth for impala and nearly got run over by a pair of big dog baboons that were fighting. They broke cover at less than 15 yards and there was no way I could see anything through the scope at 3x.

Thats exactly what I have on mine mounted in Warne QD's. The 1.75-6 would also be a nice scope.

I have a weaver K6 on my 30-06 and I find 300yds to be about "it" for 6X. the 1.75-6 is a good option. mind you the 2.5-8 has more eye relief.

i had a VXII 3-9x40 that was broken after three shots. then after i had a redfield 2-7x32 and an old Leupold fixed 3 power called alaskan that is working great today on a 9,3x62 ...

the 2.5-8x36 should be a great choice.

I have a VX-ii in 3-9x40 and it is all I need. Since I don't plan on poking anything beyond 250 or so yards with this beauty , I find it perfect. STILL, I look at that sharp edge on the ocular edge of the scope, and JUST KNOW I'm gonna get tagged sooner or later with "scope eye". All the same, who gives a ####, I don't find the recoil any worse than my .300winmag with stiff loads under a 180 or 200 grain bullet. So, if I haven't cut myself yet in 40+ years of shooting bigger guns, I am not about to worry now. I DID consider putting my Bushnell 3200 on it only because of the nice rubber ring they put on the ocular end . But once I shot it, I stopped worrying. Hold it firm, and you'll do great. As soon as I can find a 1.5-5 Leupold , I am gonna switch it out, cause I love lower zoom scopes.

The new VX3s have a thread-in rubber eyepiece, that might give you some piece of mind when you get your 1.5-5. I'd try a 1.75-6, when the light gets low it walks away from the straight tube scope.

My .375s are wearing a 3.5-10 Leupold and a 3-9 Zeiss Diavari. I never wished for less power on those particular rifles, but did get into an argument with a cape buffalo about who should get out of who's swamp while I was carrying a 2.5-8 on a .458. I would have cheerfully swapped for the irons at that point (and paid something to boot) but it all worked out. The only thing worse than wading out of a swamp in the rain is getting carried out of a swamp.

If I had to have a variable on it, I'd go with a Leupold 1.75-6, Matte, with the Heavy Duplex, that's what I have on mine, and I couldn't think of a better scope for that rifle. I also have a Leupold 2.5X compact with Heavy Duplex as a second scope, sighted in and then removed - it's really nice and light, and as close to bomb-proof as one is likely to find in a scope. Really though, one would be hard pressed to beat a straight Leupold 4x33 with Heavy Duplex reticle, especially if one has a set of QD rings. Seeing as how I just ordered a set of Alaska Arms LLC low QD Ruger rings, I will be sending my matte 4x33 back to have a Heavy Duplex reticule installed, and it will likely become my go-to scope for that rifle. As good as variables have gotten, they still don't come close to a fixed power scope as far a tough goes. And light weight too.

I had a fixed 4power on my 30-06 but found it to not be enough zoom. I would spot game with my 10x binos and get the gun to the shoulder and find a very tinny critter in comparison. I do like the rough and tough of fixed power scopes.

I'll take the real versatility of a variable over the theoretical durability of a fixed. Even at close bush range higher power is handy for finding and threading bullets through little holes in the bush.

I've used the 1.5-5 but got rid of it in favor of the 2.5-8. Works good for me out to 400 yards, longest I've shot the 375ruger. I've also shot bear and deer at a few paces and never thought the 2.5 was a handicap.

I agree. on a 40 1/2" OAL rifle I think a 12"-13" scope would be bulky and take away from the function of a short stocky rifle. mind you a 11" scope will hinder that as well.

to date that longest big game shot I have taken was +/- 150yrds on a black bear that just crumbled. On that note a 4 power would be plenty. but its hunting and you never know. I practice out to 300yrds but haven't had to use that skill in the field yet
