375 Weatherby

Okay, so not obsolete. I wonder how many .450 Marlin rounds are out there taking game from deer to elephant in a given year, what percentage this would be of the number of .375 H&H rounds taking the same game each and every year to this day? Let's just narrow it down to cape buffalo, what would be your guess as to the number of cape buffalo taken by the non-obsolete .450 Marlin in an average year? Zero? One occasionally? Ever? How about the H&H? Who wants to lay odds that a buffalo dropped to a .375 H&H on this very day?

Let's cut to the chase as good hunters do. From Oxford Dictionary - "Obsolete, def: no longer produced or used; out of date."

So is the claim that the .375 H&H is obsolete literally true or literally nonsense?

"Obsolete, def: no longer produced or used; out of date

There you go, answered it yourself. Out of date.

When was the last time a cartridge was designed that looks like the H&H? About 100 years ago.

Many years ago I rechambered a stainless Model 70 H&H barrel to 375 Wby. The guy I sold it to reported 300 grainers at 2800. I still have the reamer if anyone wants to build one.
That's fairly close to the ballistics I've seen. I found some old data in a Wolfe publication that showed 300's at 2900, but I could not get there with what I saw as acceptable pressures. - dan

Back in the 70's the .375 H & H AI was a popular chambering... You could shoot the standard 375 H & H and the .375 WBY in it. Built a few of them while at Barotto Sports.

Today I would have to go with Gatehouse's favorite version.

That comparison makes no logical sense.
Using those requirements, is the 22 LR obsolete or discontinued? How many cape buff are taken each year with it?
How many 22 LR rounds are sold each year compared to 375 HH?

I can do 2900 out of mine with 300’s but I have settled on 250 ttsx as my go to. The recoil when loaded right up is fairly significant but I don’t mind.
My sako is 370 sako is fairly stout as well mostly due to the fact it is so lite.
My bee is a fantastic shooter, but the weatherby brand brass is junk, one reload and the primer pockets are done. The reformed h&h brass is fine.

I know this thread is showing some patina, but I'm playing with the idea of building a 375 wby on a p14/17 action.

I already shoot .375 Taylor, and like the idea of a faster more powder hungry means of launching .375 projectiles.

I'll send you a DM about the reamer.

That's what mine is built on. Tank of a gun. - dan

"But we didn't need more velocity"

This is the interesting point that after learning that many PHs download their H&Hs softs to 2300 fps for better penetration due to less expansion, lead me to build the 376 Steyr instead of the 375 Wby. (Along with the fact that my recent shoulder issues at the time, and the less recoil on the shoulder would make it that more enjoyable to shoot, and therefore be hunted with more.)

I would love to take it to Africa, but the truth is I am going to use it mostly on NA game, and therefore do not require the additional velocity one would need for "stopping" on our lighter game. (And why I am only using the 260 gr AccuBond in it at this time.) Hope to use it on a grizzly or brown bear too, perhaps a muskox, one day. (Watched a hunting show recently where the classify muskox in Greenland as "DG".)

That, and the realities of issues with travelling with firearms today, is leading me to use PH rifles, instead of travelling with my own. Hopefully I will hunt some DG one day, but am not planning on my second trip, next May (eland being the heaviest game on this trip).
Although I am a lefty, I have shot (and even hunted) many RH rifles over the past 35 years in medium and big bore cartridges, and as friends still have their Brnos, CZs, and Winchesters (375, 416, and 458 cals), I could practice before going, (with me supplying the ammo to do so) to freshen skills and muscle memory should the PH's rifles be of same makes and models.
