my buddy and i are sitting here tonite discussing a wildcat that we both read about but can not remember where...or it's exact name (.375 taylor seems to ring a bell) Anyways it was based on a .338 win mag necked up to .375...anyone know anything about it. it sounded great and we were looking at maybe doing one up....any help would be great

thanks

It is a great cartidge! I had Bevan King build me a 375-06 on a Husqvarna first, and then bought at 375 Chatfield-Taylor on a Ruger 77 from Rockchucker on this site about ten years later.

Both worked very well, however the CT easily duplicates 375 H&H ballistics. :)

hi ted
the .375 ct sounds right...was the brass formed from .338 win mag or some other parent cartridge?
thanks
jim w

Straight neck up from 338 Win Mag. One pass through the sizing die and you have it. No fireforming needed, just load and go. :)

I killed literally tons of big game with mine: 68 gr of 4064, 270 gr bullet and a magnum primer.

THANKS TED
that's the one we were looking for ...any idea who did the transformation?? I used to get Steve Holburn (North Bay area)to do my barrel work but have been unable to contact him...( moved maybe??)
thanks jim w

375-338 Taylor is a good cartridge, and if you want a *wildcat* then go for it.

Keep in mind a 375 Ruger can be used in a regular sized action, and you can buy ammo and brass off the shelf....:)

And you can buy a 375 Ruger rifle off the shelf for far less than getting rifle built, too.:)

Please forgive my ignorance here, but why would you not just buy a .375 H+H?
One reason is that it will fit into any 30/06 action w/o any major alterations to the action. If you have a magnum length action, there is no real advantage.

Here's a pic .......

the nice thing here is that it will probably be built on a Ruger No.1 action that has a pooched chamber in .300 win mag..(damage done before i got her)

thanks again for the info guys

Another cool custom rifle/wildcat cartridge combination would be a .375/284 chambered in a Savage 99. For the man interested in a powerful powerful cartridge combined with a light package this would prove to be a very interesting project.

this sounds interesting..can't recall hearing about this one..any specs...i have a couple 99 actions in .308 win lying around with nothing in particular planed for them;)

thanks

I remember a magazine article on the .375/284 in a Savage 99 years ago, but it was lost in my house fire back in 2000, so I don't have the specs anymore. I would anticipate that the cartridge would be the equivalent of the .375/06, and if I recall a 270 gr bullet would make better than 2500 fps in the Savage and 2700 in a long action bolt gun.

Just a clarification (I hope) Jim.

I think the 375 Taylor is pretty much a necked up 338 WinMag - with a few slight changes it would appear. It's more famous incarnation is the 416 Taylor pictured here below from stevespages - with the 338WinMag for comparison.

And Steve H. lives in Warren near Sudbury. If you want I can PM his contact info to you. Also I think Eddie VonAtzigen in Peterborough may (???) have 375-338 reamer. He commented to me about 20 years ago he thought it was a very good chambering.
