378 Weatherby Magnum

You like carrying a ten pound hunting rifle and hearing protection.. the recoil.. tolerable...
Is this a hunting application or range gun.? Truck gun?
Big holes and flat..
My mark 5 like 270 gr tsx and LXR bullets.. 250 AND 235 TSX

Tried some different powders but R 22 was the ticket..
270 gr@ 3200 fps and under 2 inch at 200 yards..

Only 5 to 6 reloads per brass the primer pocket gets lose,
As a hunting rifle I figure gets shot 4 to five times a year , it's an executable cost.
What rifle are you looking at MOUNT SWEETNESS.

Does anyone on here have much experience with 378 Weatherby?
What can you tell me about this round, likes and dislikes..

No personal experience, but Weatherby is one of those cool companies that puts pictures on their ammo boxes of what you should be shooting that particular ammo at. Here's the box they used to sell .378 Weatherby in:

Costly ammo, costly brass, uses a lot of powder, produces a lot of energy, kicks very hard. Seems to do well on Elephant.

If you hand load you do not need to load so hot your primer pockets get loose...

I agree guntech,, you Dont need to load hot.. I bought a nine lug action for a reason.. it cycles smooth with hot loads , primers show little sign. Brass stretches,
I think if you buy a weatherby you want that performance.. or ... I would have bought a 375 rum .
. 375 CCC... ruger or H&h ..

I would bother shoting an unfired weatherby, non the less if its collectable.. have a nice, l have a super varmint master in 220 Sw , speaking about collectable... I shoot it ..
Maybe you should shot that old girl when you get her..
Roy would smile for sure

I have had a custom .378 for MANY years.
Originally had it built for bear work.
It is a magnificent cartridge which delivers lots of whallop from both ends of the rifle.
Have used it for everything from deer to moose, and of course bear. And everything in between.
Would I buy another?.... not likely.
Expensive to shoot, and to load for.
Requires premium bullets to meet it’s hunting potential.
As has been stated.... the low number of annual shots will probably make ammo cost negligible.
Finding ammo on the other hand.....

My 1980 vintage MK 5 378 WM like IMR7828 with Seirra 300gr GameKings. Nice rifle ,recoil is tolerable, very accurate round, but you better be a handloader and a strong shoulder to carry the rifle

When I was looking for a replacement of my .416 Rigby, I considered then rejected the .378 Weatherby due to the cost of the brass, and went with the .375 Ultra. At the time I had my first .375 Ultra built, Ultramag brass was going for a bit less than $1/ea while the Weatherby brass was more like $2/ea. The .378 produces an additional 100 fps relative to the .375 Ultra with any given bullet weight, but I doubt that I could exploit the advantage. I wouldn't be concerned about the recoil of the .378 Weatherby if you're used to shooting powerful rifles. I was able to hold 3 rounds prone with a hot loaded .416 Rigby, but usually found the 4th round unpleasant, where the .375 Ultra 5 rounds prone were manageable, and 3 shot groups even with a 2X scout scope were pretty good.

Easier to make hits than with a 270. Due to improved exterior ballistics. I run 110 grains IMR 7828 under the 300gr Sierra BTSP, does 3035 fps from my 26" Mark V

Recoil isnt bad if you're used to shooting big rifles

I had a look at it today.
Early 80's gun in an honest 99% condition.
He calls it unfired, could very well be. Crown and bolt face are mint, bore crystal clear mint.
Weatherby Mark V deluxe
Beautiful piece, to me it looks to be nicer than a Sako Deluxe of that time period.
I have one picture of it, if anyone would like to help me with an approx value?
I did not purchase this rifle as of yet.

I know nothing of collector value for rare Weatherbys and what not, but locally a handful have come for sale in the last year. Both were from an estate, one was privately sold the other collection wad at auction.

At auction there was an 80s vintage Mark V custom shop un-fires in .460 Weatherby, it sold for $1,600 before auction fees. Another 80s vintage Mark V Deluxe in 340 Weatherby, un-fired for $1,300, 80s Vintage Mark V Deluxe in .378 Weatherby Mag un-fired for $1,400.

The private sale had 80s vintage Mark 5s in 7mm WM (left hand), .257 WM LH (un fired), Mark 5 Accumark in 338-378 WM and 30-378 WM (both fired). All sold for an average of $1,000 privately. He had other weatherbys in that private collection too, i just couldnt remember what off the top of my head.

Don't be throwing those boxes with the animal prints on them out either. They are worth a bit of coin to collectors.
