Just starting to reload the 38/357. I have a mixture of fired brass, both 38 and 387. Obviously the powder loads in the two cases would be different, but I noticed that 38 primer is small pistol, while the 357 is small pistol magnum (according to Lyman #48). This is just for target shooting so is there any real problem with buying just the small pistol primer and using that in the 357 loads?
Cheap and lazy.
Thanks,

the difference is about 3 bucks/hundred- the only place i've noticed any appreciable difference is 1)heavy loads 2) ball powders in rifles, which mandates mag primers- and some primers are strong enough( winchesters) that they don't list a magnum, but use the same primer for both purposes

I pretty much only use the magnum primers for both, but I also use mostly winchester ball powder and the mag primer is recommended...

I'll probably be using Clays - I use that for my .45 and it seems to have the load data available for .38/.357. doesn't seem to be any reccomendations for primer - magnum or not.

I find the clays excellent in .45, not so good in the 38/357, theres lots of recipes out there but I find that it does not burn well for some reason, almost like not all the powder gets burned? I find Winchester 296 awesome for the 357, and Unique super accurate for the .38 spl.

Clay is not listed for 357 mag in Hodgdon handbook. Best choice will be H110 but expensive because you will need about 22 gr max for a good load. titegroup is what I use right now, not the best but burn clean and reasonable accurate. for details you can get on Hodgdon website.
