I have pulled and measured bullets from some of the newer Winchester 38-55 ammo.
They were right at .3765" [I used a vernier micrometer to measure]
I have some Barnes original that are at .3772"
Also have some very old "Dominion" bullets from CIL that measure just over .377"
Keep in mind that the base of the slug will "bump up" a bit when it is fired, so a slightly undersized
slug may work just fine.
If you are using cast, though, a bullet .002"- .003" oversize will probably work best in your 38-55.
I have a 1980 built M94 Winchester and the groove diameter in it is just over .377"
It shoots all the above jacketed bullets well, and in addition, shoots the Barnes 255 grain .375" bullet
designed for the 375 Winchester just fine.
I can drive 255 grain jacketed bullets to 1750 fps in my rifle,
using H322 or IMR 3031.
As a side note, I shot my second biggest Whitetail with my 38-55 at 80 yards. Very impressive results!!
