I just bought a beautiful .357 Magnum Winchester rifle on CGN and have shot it this afternoon with .38 Special +p ammo. and was very pleased. Now my questions are Would it be possible to shoot the .38 S&W round in it? It seem the same diameter as .38 Special but is much shorter. So if I want to shoot someting with less power shall I go for that ammo? Is this caliber still commonly available? and at what price? and where?

Any info please.

38S&W is not the same diameter as 38SPL it is .360 whereas 38SPL is .357/358. I doubt it will chamber in the rifle, but it might. It is not very common, matter of fact components are getting harder to find all the time.

Why not use non-+P ammo?

Do you reload? You can make some very light recoil loads for 38SPL.

One thing to watch out for. Given a steady diet of 38SPL, any firearm with a 357 chamber will eventually have a ring of crud form in the chamber where the case mouth is. It is sometimes ignorant to clean it out of a revolver, it can be maddening in a lever gun.

Just received it on friday, and had NO ammo for it so I went to a guy I know who as a small gun repair shop, and he had those +p loose ammo sitting in a dusty bowl, and one old box of +p FEDERAL so I took the lot for $20 but I am planning to get just regular .38 spl as I am just doing some fun shooting with that rifle Cheaper the better.

Does anyone know where I could buy .38 Special in case of 500 or 1000 at good price?

Keep your eyes open. Many gun stores have cheap 38SPL ammo that is not advertised. It's not uncommon to find it for $7.50-10.00 a box.

Heck there was even case lots advertised in the EE at a smokin' price a short while ago, although I can't seem to find it now.....

The chamber in my rossi myst be big because I have done it . just a couple of shells I had kicking around , they were lead slugs but I have seen jacketed ammo for 38 s&w ammo those might jam in the barrel .
