Im a handgun newbie. Is .38 S&W the same as .38 Special? If not, is .38 S&W still available?

no and no 38 s&w is totally different and not readily available you can get brass and dies around but finding lead is another story.

.38 S&W is different that .38 Special. Ammo is still avail sporadically(when you can find it), but it's simpler to reload it...

No, the S&W uses a .360" bullet. The .38 Special a .357" bullet and it has a much longer case. The availability of .38 S&W depends on where you live. Winchester, forone, loads it, so if your local gun shop doesn't have any, ask 'em to order it for you. Money up front in most cases.

better check out thse stamps... Dont ever interchange ammo. It may get messy!
The numbers may seem similar, but they arent.
