Was looking at a pair of 38 spl revolvers for some Cowboy shooting action, however when I looked for a case of ammo I found it hard to come by even a box of it.

So is 38 spl a particularly hard round to come by. I can't say that I came across many places even carried it... which struck me as odd. I guess I always considered it to be a popular round... without actually ever having had to look for it before of course;)

Keep in mind that most Cowboy shooters handload because you only have to hit the target and not knock it down. The ammo I load for both my wife and myself generates only 650 fps, you don't need much more than that. Your guns take less of a beating also. Depending where you buy your components for reloading you could be making .38 special for $12.00-$13-.00 per hundred after you get organized.

Tons of it around here, but it's not cheap. $25/50 lead round nose vs $28/50 for .357 jacketed soft points. +1 on reloading, I'm using hardcast semi wadcutters at magnum velocities for about $15/100.

It seems to be easier to get bulk lately, compared to when I first got my .357/.38 revolvers two years ago. I picked up 1000rds of American Eagle from TSE on their Easter sale, prior to that I purchased 1000rds from SFRC when I first got my revolver.
