Hi I had a guy at the club tell me by shooting 38 speical rounds in a 357 mag it will wear or reck the forcing cones in a pistol.
Does anyone have info on this? I have been doing it for a while now as I enjoy shooting a lighter load. I have not noticed any wear in the barrel.
Cheers appreciate any info

I don't think it will do anything to the forcing cone on a revolver as the actual projectiles are the same calibre and often the same weight. What I have seen happen, especially with lead projectiles, is a buildup of a collar of lead just behind the headspace rim in each bore in the cylinder. This can cause a problem over time when you return to full .357 rounds. Keep an eye on it and use a good lead remover to brush those out from time to time and you will be fine.

Back in the day , when US police packed 357 mag pistols.
Many used 3 rounds of high velociy 38 special and 3 rounds of
357 mag. The reasoning at the time was you could get 3 38 special
rounds off quickly and finish up with 3 357 mag it it was required.
Then they move to the 6 357 mag and practiced to get them all off
It was also politically correct to shoot someone with a 38 special
rather than a 357 mag. It was a way to get city's to agree to issue
357 mag revolvers to city police. Since State Police in most cases
we're issued 357 mag.

Absolutely no issue shooting .38spl out of a .357 mag. As long as you clean your cylinder's chambers regularly enough.

You can put 38 Special in a 357 Magnum but you can't put 357 Magnum into a 38 Special Only. That's the general rule. Make sure to read the documentation about your particular firearm to confirm, of course. The guy at the range is wrong regarding the general rule.

That person is suffering from what is known as Rectal Cranial Inversion..Simply said his head is so far up his butt he needs a plexiglas stomach just to see where he's going...:)dB

HaHa that's funny:)
These people have run into me from time to time, the Plexiglas gets dirty.
I have had 4 357 magnums, and I have only shot 5 rounds of 357. No issues with any of my revolvers.

95% of the ammo I put through my revolvers is .38 special; and I've been doing it for over 30 years. Whoever told you this doesn't have a clue what they are talking about.

If you reload, you can use 357 mag cases reduced down to 38 SPL levels. Pleasant to shoot and moves the "crud ring" forward where it isn't an issue.
