38S&W dies for 9mm

Trying to read up whether I can use my 38s&w dies for 9mm. Considering that I'll be using cast bullets, the 38 expander die should work. If need be I can turn a cutom expander plug on my lathe.

I'd experiment but at the moment I don't cast for the 9mm...yet.

Yes...and that why you get the coke bottle looking cartridges when you use cast bullets. Cast bullets usually have a larger diameter

Dies are pretty cheap, buy the right ones for the calibre, it will save you a lot of problems down the road. LOL

Will still have to get a 38S&W expander plug because standard 9mm expander does not work well with cast.

I have the 9mm carbide dies that I am not using. If you want to borrow them you know where I am.

Last time i used cast 9mm bullets, I used my regular 9mm expander. Didn't know it wasn't supposed to work.

It will work but lots of people have said that you would end up swaging the base of the lead bullet which would affect accuracy.

Ahh, good to know. I only shot them at 10-15yrds but they were pretty accurate but then again, that distance doesn't really mean much.

Interesting thought! I am not directly experienced with this so take my thoughts considering the price you paid for them.

When I look at the Saami spec it shows shows CHAMBER case mouth dimension 0.3810 9mm luger and 0.3880 for 38 S&W. Would that imply that a spent 9mm case would not be resized (or not by much) by the 38s&w die? This may be more dependent on the size of the 9mm Luger chamber in the particular firearm?

unrelated: I've got a colt new police model 38s&w with a blown forcing cone. I think my uncle tried 38 special in it before it found its way to my house.

I believe the OP was referring to using the 38SW expanding die for flaring 9mm cases for cast pills.
