This should bring on some interesting comments. As you know, I have been experimenting with .395 cast ww balls loaded in 444 Marlin brass and also in shortened Federal Upland plastic hulls. I've been shooting them in my 3" chambered Lee Enfield Ishapore convert.

Reading here and there gave me the idea to somehow expand the ball then size it to fit the barrel better. I measured the barrel at the muzzle and came up with .409. So, how do I expand the ball? Simple. Put it on a solid steel base, i.e. vise, and whack it a couple of times with a 1/2 lb. Chinese hammer, then resize it to .410. I rooted through my goodies and actually came up with a .410 LEE bullet sizer die!!!!!

My theory is that, no matter which way the ball/slug turns, it will contact the walls of the barrel. I loaded four Upland Load hulls today.

Left 2 are resized; middle 2 are flattened; right 2 are as cast. They sit nicely in the plastic hull.

Done this with 357 mag. 3 ball load.
Drill a hole in a 1/2” steel plate the size of the bore. Get a steel rod just under hole size. Put your plate on an anvil. Ball goes in followed by the rod. Beat the rod with a big hammer flattening the ball. Makes nice flat disc’s. I lubed mine with Lee alox.
Back to 357. No longer a six shooter with the 3 ball load. Now shoots 18 bullets. Does lead the bore after shooting 4 cylinders full. Would probably make a good defensive load at close quarters.

I played with this years ago for sh*it n giggles. I found the 4x 000 buckshot ( with wad) would spread so fast you couldn't hit what you were aiming at25 feet away. I then flattened them to max diameter and it helped hold them together better but still not great. I then went to smaller smaller 00 buckshot where I could flatten them more and get 5 inside the wad. It was another step of improvement but very far away from wonderful. Thats where I stopped.

How were they shooting as is? I'm asking because I have a .395 ball mold, but haven't tried it yet.

I originally shot two unsized .395 balls out of my .410 Lee Enfield muskets. Out of five shots, all ten balls stayed on an 8 1/2x 11 paper at 50 feet. I don't think I've tried the "resized to .410" flattened ones yet. Two of those per round. Not sure I would be firing either one from a full choked .410 regular shotgun. Especially the .410 flattened ones would be a tight fit.
