I've an interest in a replacing my current junker. I like the 940 jm and 1301 comp pro, except I am repulsed by these disgusting color blue receivers. Cgc had an older m2 which didnt have an opened loading port so that's a no thank you. I'm tracking the older 1301 comps faulty mechanism dumping its rounds while firing which I assume is why stores are putting them "on sale". I was also considering a browning maxus 2 and getting it put to 5.9 rounds as per canadia law but I couldn't find a stalker with 26inch barrel. Id prefer 22-24 but I don't think browning makes that.

Nothing I see in the market really meets my needs for multigun.

Does anyone have experience with tac ord versa max with the auto lifter?

Does benelli or beretta take requests for the canadian market for like receiver color and barrel length? That 1301 comp pro in earth tone color or just black with a 12ga 3.5inch barrel and mag to 5.9 would really get my jimmies ruffled.

Alternatively have 940 jm pros with the black receivers and camo shown up? I'd probably jump on one of those.

Cheers.

Blue receivers can be cerakoted by a competent shop.

Older 1301 Comps are on sale because Stoeger Canada runs a promotion across its brand portfolio.

Consider Breda B12i Comp - it's competition ready with all the bells and whistles and same quality as the brand they used to own (benelli).

I have a versamax, done up as much as possible without being Tac ord, even though most parts are from there and that's who shortened my barrel. It was before the gen 2 1301's came out, that's probably the option I would go for, the stoeger mk3 seem to do pretty well as well.

I have a Tac Ord Versamax with an auto lifter kit.

I have had the Versamax for a few years and it is a great gun for action shooting - I also have a Benelli M4 which is heavily worked over by Tac Ord and the Versamax is a better gun IMO due to the ergonomics (pistol grip gets in the way for quad loads / the loading port of the Versamax is HUGE - much bigger than the M4 / better trigger on the Versamax). It's actually surprising how similar the two guns are (some parts are actually interchangeable - ie extractor etc).

I ran the Versamax for a few seasons without the Autoloader kit and got the loading technique dialled in pretty good (if the gun is dry / bolt locked back I would grab four shells and drop one in the open port then then slam the bolt release and load the other 3 into the tube). It took practice but I got decent at it.

When the autoloader kit became available I picked one up. It didnt work well at all when first fitted, the "timing" was off (ie when I would load the first two rounds into the tube the gun would grab the first shell and attempt to load it but the magazine spring was under too much tension and it would cause the first shell to get jammed against the end of the gate). I bought a few magazine springs (from memory they are $10 each) and cut coils off them until the system worked without any jamming (ie with a shorter spring the rounds were under less force / tension and would come out slower so the gate had fully dropped instead of the round getting stuck agains the end of the lifter).

An added benefit was that the rounds were easier to load too as the there was less spring force to push against but I continued to play around and shorten the spring until it was too short to provide adequate force to eject the rounds from the tube to run reliably. After that I knew there was a sweet spot where the round wasnt coming out too fast and the spring had enough force to still feed reliably.

In summary I would 100% recommend the Tac Ord Versamax (Tac Ord gear is top notch and Casey is awesome to deal with), regarding the autoloader kit I like it but if I had to got back to the non autoloader configuration I wouldn't lose too much sleep.

There's the VR-66 from TNA; that's a proper M2 clone, with some tasteful modifications, AND they sell spare parts should something break.

I dont think there's anything wrong with the gen 1 1301 Comp, most people say the shell release is a non-issue. What kind of prices are they selling for now? If I hadn't just recently bought a gen 2 I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

Still haven't figured out the issues with the kenny auto lifter kit yet, might be my winter project.

Mossberg Pro tactical felt nice when shouldered at Taccom. 22 24 inch barrel for 3G seems excessive.

I will be holding out until I can get one, did they say when they would be available by any chance?
I prefer an 18.5 or 20” barrel myself, I agree on 22-24” being a bit long imho

I'm running a 26" barrel Maxus 2 Stalker with a Nordic extension (Had to machine a little spacer so the threads wouldn't bottom out) for my practical division stuff, and a modded (By me. Being a machinist helps) Versa Max for open division. I love the Maxus, it loads surprisingly decent for a stock gun. Don't think I'm gonna dink with it too much. And the factory auto load lifter is flawless. The mag cut-off makes ghost loading easy, just gotta remember to flip it off when you're done, lol. And the lack of a shell release button combined with the auto load lifter just makes the MOA so much simpler.

I brought probably the first J Kenny (Which is where Tac Ord gets them from, they don't have their own lifter) auto load lifters into Canada back when they first came out a couple of years ago. Getting it to run properly in the Versa Max was a chore man, I don't know that I'd recommend it to anyone that isn't fairly mechanically inclined. But I finally got it worked out, and I love it. If Tac Ord installs it, they would hopefully get it running right. They are definitely finnicky though. I think it's worth it, but it took a while to get there. Might not be worth it for everyone.

As far as barrel length, it really depends on what your matches look like. We do a lot of heavy knockdown stuff, and the guys with shorter barrels definitely struggle. I think 24" is about the sweet spot for our matches, but you might not need it for yours. The 28" barrel on my Versa Max is definitely too long, lol.

Apologies didn't ask when the next tranche of SG would be arriving.

Shouldering it felt very nice, very nice.

The optic cut on it is perfect, Mossberg had a Vortex RD mounted on the tactical.

Sniffer, this may be a dumb question, but here goes anyways: With the JK Autoloading kit, do you lose the ability to ghost load? Thank you.

Great question. Would affect the most recent version of 1301's as well. Very interested in the answer.

Agreed, especially since us Canucks can't make use of the extra length for a mag tube, assuming they're flush with the barrel.

I had the J Kenny kit and although Tacord installed it to their displeasure and warning it never ran. The worst refund experience I've had to date from J Kenny.

I did think of another way to get a top notch shotgun for 3gun, find a 3.5" Browning A5 Stalker that autoloads without issue (original design). Get it tricked out for 3gun (barrel cut with new choke cut or keep the 26" barrel, extended magazine tube, match saver, stipple or grip tape, get it tapped for an optic, you're at around $2-2500k. If I didn't have a Versa Max I'd try this route out. You get 7 2 3/4" shells legally in the tube and a working autoloading feature.

The Hunting Gear Guy on YouTube has a video on this.

You can still ghost load with the J Kenny Auto Load lifter.

Mine took a season of dinking around with to get it to actually run properly. They're very finnicky, not for the faint of heart, lol.

Buy a black 1301 Comp off the EE, and change it over to whichever Pro parts you want. I too hate the blue receiver of the Pro model. Can get the new bolt release mechanism for less than $100.
