Hey all.. sorry for another #4 identification thread...I know there are many, and I've done a bit of searching.

Here are a few pics of my #4 Mk1. The receiver ring has some barely legible markings on it.. I think the top one might be M47C...but it is too worn to tell.

I've read this link: http://www.enfieldcollector.com/serials.html but would like your opinions... especially on date of manufacture, as the date stamping has been removed over this rifles lifetime.

Also, which is the actual serial #? AA26446 or V39904?

Thanks in advance!

Also... not pictured, there is an L on top of the barrel by the receiver and the word 'surrey' on the top about 6" down the length.

If there is a M47C then it is a BSA. That would make the V39904 the right #. That is all very odd as the serial# on the butt socket is in the right place and is a Faz#. A bit confusing. If the #s were changed for some reason, the old one would normally have been scrubbed

I'm going to bet that it is a BSA. My 1945 BSA is numbered the same as yours. It is electro penciled in the same style and location. The lettering is so close that it almost looks like the same guy or girl did it. My# is S39107 So that would make yours at the tail end of total production for BSA in 45.
The Faz # on the socket was added later for some obscure reason. It would not have been done on an ftr without scrubbing and even then, it would be odd to change the #. You have a mystery but only on the socket #.

The AA number has been noted on a few different rifles with the original serial number still intact, there was a discussion on the Milsurps Knowledge forum a while back (will try to find it) no one had a definitive answer but it appears to be a inventory/rack number.
Here's a example on my Remington P14

Thanks all!
I'm a big fan of the #4, and this is my second one and it's a very good shooter.

What's with the 'SURREY" on the barrel... does anyone know what that means?
