Hey guys,

I'm looking for a 4 shot aluminum side saddle for my 870 (I don't feel like chopping my stock pump). Anyone know of a good brand/ dealer? I have just done a quick search of MESA before work here an found nothing but 6 shot saddles.

^TacStar makes a 4 round - Epps has them for $29.
they are not bad, just make sure you loc-tite all the screws (even the small ones) and dont tighten them like a gorilla since they are tapped into aluminum.
they retain the rounds very snug under recoil.

Mesa.....only way to go.......Casey at Tac-ord has them...great guy to deal with.

i kept hearing this over and over here, which is why i was very hesitant to buy the TacStar at all. ive had zero problems with it and my d*ck didnt fall off.

Same... I have used TacStar, Mesa, and the new S&J velcro side saddles and personally didn't find any of them stand out WAY farther than the rest. All have pros and cons.

Short summaries from my personal experience:
TacStar - looks ugly and is bulky and it feels like it's cheap but by far best retention of rounds under recoil. I had no actual issues with it

Mesa - looks nicest, fit and finish is nicer than my shotgun LOL, less bulky than TacStar, but I found round retention less than great. Half the loops were tight and half were loose which to me is more annoying than having them all just be loose. I also didn't like how the loops are so thin.. would have liked them a bit wider to cover more shell

S&J velcro - the one I decided to stick with for now. Very thin profile, retention has been decent so far, I like that you can have several and just stick them on. The long term durability has yet to be proven for me but I can't help but feel (whether I'm right or wrong) that the elastics would wear out faster than polymer or aluminum but I guess at the affordable price, I can just replace them easily

I've noticed the same thing with my Mesa 6 round side saddle, I'm guessing the tighter retention has more to do with those loops' proximity to the receiver screws than anything. Still happy with it so far, I may have to pick up the S&J hook & loop carrier for the stock as I can't seem to find a leather buttcuff anywhere.

Just mounted my mesa 6 shell holder and it looks way better then the tac star stuff. I love the look of the 6 shells, so i pcked up houge overmould stock and forend so it would fit. Looks great, hogue kit was only around $70 from Ballistic Experience, great guy to deal with BTW

Hope it helps

Cheers

personally i could care less what it looks like as long as it fulfills its intended purpose - which the tacstar does for $30.
its a moot point for me anyway since ive removed my sidesaddles and switched to a shell stripper instead:

I don't deny I'm superficial LOL.

I stand by my previous post and if anyone were to ask me which I recommend solely on round retention, I would respond with TacStar with no hesitation.

manbearpig, how do you like the 4x4? When loaded, do they rattle much?

i actually own a pair of Classic4s, not the double stack (ive ordered one but its taking ages to get here). no they dont rattle much since the spring holds them in place.
im not into 3-gun or ninja reloads :), but i find i can reload a lot more fluidly from a shell stripper than i can from a sidesaddle, and it leaves the gun less bulky and less 'snaggy'.

the sidesaddles are easier to refill with shells though, and allow you to visually choose which shell you pluck from the sidesaddle - so you could have a mix of buck/shot and slugs and choose whichever you needed.

everything has advantages/disadvantages.

I've never seen fore ends like this before. Where do you find something like that (particularly for a Mossberg 500)?

thats the Speedfeed LE forend.
the Mossberg one looks different.

never tried the 500/590 one, but the 870 version is IMHO the best synthetic forend just in terms of grip/ergonomics/solid feel.

Wait a second... maybe I'm thinking this is something different. Is that deep groove on the forend capable of holding extra shells? If not I totally misinterpreted the use of it
