I'm just getting back into shooting and my guess is that there are some of you out there who are very good at what you do when it comes to shooting, but I must admit that I am very impressed when someone can get a 4 shot group at 1000 yrds in just under 3 inches. Check out these links:

I think they were using a .50 BMG but it's still pretty impressive.

Any tricks of the trade for me? I bought a Weatherby Vanguard in a .243 with a Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 firefly scope for my Dad to hunt deer with here in Central Alberta. Most likely the shots will be long and in open areas.

Rick builds shooters thats for sure.

Standard rifle tweaks are:

-floating your barrel
-clean up the trigger
- bed the action

Start reloading, you can figure out what your rifle likes.

Match barrels properly installed. Quality match bullets and loads tuned to the barrel. Well bedded action. Solid scope base, rings and clear optics. Crisp trigger and a stock that fits you AND is balanced.

Lots and lots of practise.

www.longrangehunting.com. I have three articles there covering building a LR hunting rifle, optics and loading.

Also, sites like 6mmBR.com and Benchrestcentral.com can provide alot of info and ideas on accuracy tuning.

Anytime you can get a rifle to group 1/2 moa or under at that range, it is shooting well. The key is repeatability.

That is not so easy...

Jerry

Glad you like the group. It measures 2 inches center to center. And yes it was a 50 bmg. It is the custom blue 50 that is on ATRS gallery. It was shot prone out of a clean cold bore. The custom rifle build takes alot of inconcistancy issues out of trying to shoot long distance.
We told Rick we wanted our rifle to shoot 10-12 inch groups at 1000 yards...so far i can only get it to shoot 2-3 inch groups!!! haha.
Were do you live?
We live just outside of Lethbridge and may be able to set you up with some 1000 yard thunder groups if you like.

I live just 20 minutes out of Edmonton @ Antler Lake. My step-children are older and out of the house. I miss them but like having a little more time to do stuff. My wife's going back to Holland for all of December to be with her and her family which hasn't happend for over 25 years; quite a treat for her. That may be a good time to meet up but I don't have anything really pressing. I know my step-son would love it too.
Around here, as far as ranges go, the Genesee range has an 800 yrd target mound and has a group of guys with .50 cals.
What about your way? Know a good chunk of land or a range?
I did shoot a few rounds of .50 cal at the Genesee range. After 2 shots i checked to see if my nose was bleeding? The owner of the gun laughed and said, "Big Boom huh?"
I knocked a steel plate target right off. Pretty sweet.

December .....bbrrrr. If you had a chance to shoot at Geneese you may have meet Rick. We are hoping to take in this years 50 bmg fun shoot at the Geneese range.
We have a freind that lets us shoot on his private land. We have 4 sections to shoot on. Our 50 is at Ricks getting a new pictanny rail put on so we can shoot out to 2500 yards.
And as mentioned above getting it to repeat is a real chore....I have alot of 4 shoot groups- it is the five shot group that kicks my ass...
More trigger time.

Yes it is. When I was shooting that day I loaded up 5 rounds that I had annealed the necks.
I really wanted to blow up a pail at 1000 yards with our 50.
I set up prone on a clean cold barrel and shot.. poof dirt and pail still standing.
Shot again-again-again, the impact looked so good but the pail was still there so I thought I was just over the top. With only one round left I was determined to blow that damn can up.. so I aimed over left and down.. boom... ####! can was still standing.
After loading up all my gear and driving down to pick up the pail I saw what had happened... 4 shots in 2 inches and one over left.. #### another 5 shot group gone to hell!!
5 shots into a pail and still standing.... so much for Hollywoods 50 bmg Atomic destruction !!!
Any trigger time is a good time..

That sounds awesome. Too bad about the 5th shot but i'm sure you know to Try and try again:) You'll get it.

I'll check this thread once a week and we can talk more about maybe getting together. I'm quite serious about getting excellent at precision shooting. I'm starting with a Ruger 10/22 and moving up from there. I'm not a bad shot but I'm a long way from becoming an excellent shot. That's ok. I've got alot of years to get it right.

You are already off to a good start.. a .22 is what we also do alot of 200 yd practice with.
If you get a chance to go to a F- Class shoot , try it out.
The 50bmg is much easier to hit with at long range because of the high bc and bullet weight.
Good luck and enjoy!!

Try filling the bucket with water maybe?
That would have better effect as hydraulics do not compress!
I've done the same thing with my 6.5WSM , and was totally bummed because a pop can simply fell over at 700 yards - filled it with water and that solved the problem!:D

I've had the same result.
Had someone at the range ask if i could try to put a hole in some "bullet proof" glass.
I agreed and fired one down range (100M)
I thought i'd missed as it never even flinched so we walked down.
got there and the backing paper was missing and it looked like a dent in the center of the piece of glass.
Turns out the bullet (50 cal) went through so fast it melted the plastic and sealed up the hole on the way through.
So much for bullet proof.

It was filled with water, but it only popped the lid off..found it 15 ft away.
I also have plastic gallon paint pails that did not explode but collasped??
The lid was popped off and the pail looked like it was ran over.

best shot I did was with a 7 mag, ran out of elevation at 650 or so,barska 30 mm tube, everyone on the 800 meter mound, don't know who said it, but here I was on the deck aiming into the 900 mount maybe 12 to 18 feet , not sure, but up there, and doped in wind also..at the return of the target , the spotter laughs , you got him on the chin. figure 11 tgt:D

Curious about the website and services. Since they are selling a Remington 700 Police that has been bedded and tuned I assume, how much is it cost wise over the same rifle somewhere else? It would be an interesting idea for them to have bench test targets of the "before and after" at a certain range IMHO.

You ran out of elevation at 650? Damn. Time for a new scope with more internal elevation or a sloped base.

I shot a 2.5" group off the bipod with my LE2B at 500 while I was gettign come-ups. We were using an old cast wheel from an old combine (or something like that) and at 500 yards the 168 AMaxs still busted chunks off the cast aluminum. I shot a 6" group at 850 with Big Doug's SHR 970 Tactical and a 3200 10x. I wish I'd had a better aimpoint than the Old Man's white steel buffalo (courtesy of ATRS) btu it bracketed pretty well between the mildots on either sive of crosshairs. One day I'll paint a dot on that critter and see how things work with a proper aimpoint.

There won't be any 50 cals there but you should come out to the ALRC shoot at the Genesee range if you want to check out some long range shooting and talk to a few guys.

Shoot starts on the 15th and goes to the 17th.

interesting that the .50 didn't have much effect on the water filled pail. Projectile probably didn't expend enough energy on the pail....just kept on going!
I was shooting some plastic cups filled with water at 200 and 300 yds this weekend with my .223 60gr. ballisitic tips at 3077fps. Explosion of water was pretty impressive. I had a piece of cardboard set up behind the cups and it would blow out a soft ball sized hole in the cardboard and left little pieces of the copper jacket stuck in the cardboard.
