4 shot group @ 1000 yrds!

Take 40 gr v-max's and belly shoot gophers when they're sittin pretty... warning extreme addiction!!!!!

I have been asked to shoot a block of Rino Tough bed liner. They put all the left over material into a block and want to see if the fifty will go through.... i am thinking hell ya!!!

That would be pretty interesting, how thick is the block of rhino lining?
I agree with you, I don't think it will stop the .50 unless its a few feet thick.

yeah, i would tend to think it'll make it through. Although that stuff is designed to absorb/disperse energy well.......it'd be interesting either way!

Hmm... I see three shots holes in a steel bucket, in comfortably under three inches. The top left hole is larger than the rest, so perhaps it is a double, and this is actually four shots in under three inches.

There is also another shot on the bucket, about six inches low left. If it was part of the first three/four shots, then what I am seeing is an 8"-9" four/five shot group at 1000 yards. Which is good, first-rate shooting, that only comes from a good shooter firing a good rifle under good conditions. Well done, and I think that shooter probably has a fighting chance of shooting another sub-10" five shot group at 1000 yards with his gear (but I'll stick my neck out and say that it is most unlikely that he would be able to fire a sub-3" four-shot group at 1000 yards even one time in ten attempts)

I don't want to take away from anyone's accomplishments, but let's make sure we keep our assessments of what we are seeing, somewhat realistic. When I fire a five-shot group as best as I possibly can, it's usually the case that I can see a smaller four-shot sub-group, if I get to eliminate the least favourable of my five shots. Or, if I fire several five shot groups with the same rifle/ammo/conditions/etc, it's likely that one of them will be the smallest, and one of them will be the largest - if I'm being honest with you, I won't just show you the smallest group I shot, but all of the groups that I shot.

EDIT: '1000 yards', I hope you don't take the tone of my post above to be snotty or in any way denigrating your rifle or your shooting, it certainly wasn't meant that way. Since posting it, I've re-read the thread and perhaps have a better idea of what happened (and the explanation for the fifth shot - the elevation difference being intentional). It's pretty clear to me that you have a very nicely shooting rifle, and you know how to shoot it too. Sounds like you're having enough fun that you'll keep on shooting it for a good long time!

Do you get to hold the block of Rhino hide static or will it move?

Saw a Discovery show where they were trying to make concrete block buildings more stable if a car bomb is let off beside it.

They tried a whole whack of different things with ZERO success. Then they sprayed the outside of a building with Rhino Hide or some other similar bed liner. Nothing too crazy thick as you could still tell that there were cinder block underneath.

KABOOM - building moves, shakes but zero penetration or interior damage. Windows, doors and other things attached to the building gonzoed but the building stood and would be consider stable enough for occupants to survive and get out.

There was precious little of the 'bomb' on the road so this was a lot of boom. Pretty cool stuff.

My money is that if the block is allowed to move and you were hitting it around 200yds, the slug will get stopped.

Let us know how it works out...

I am going to set it on the ground and shoot FMJ and A-Max at 1000 yards.
I am hoping to get out around the end of the month.
Our 50 was built in memory of my Dad. His birthday was May 30th and we are hoping to celebrate some thunder distruction at 1000 yards and 1 mile gong banging.
We have put FMJ's threw a 7/8 steel plate at 800 yards and made some serious dents at 1000, and snapping the logging chain links that holds the gongs.
It will be fun to see what happens.

1000 yard group

My best group so far:
3 1/2" at 1000 yards using .308 Federal Gold Metal Match 168 gr. through a 26" Hart Barrel on an Iron Brigade Armory built Chandler Sniper rifle.
Grouping was confirmed, recorded, and documented by a reporter present writing an article about the range in North-East North Carolina.

Mac308 - wow, nice group! (how many shots?) Must have been nice conditions, but still, that's fantastic shooting (especially for 168 grain GMM out of a 26" bbl).

1000 yard group

3 round group. I'll have to dig out the data book for the exact conditions, but the wind was blowing in 3 different directions/speeds between the firing point and the target.
