40-82 Winchester

I know a fellow who has an old winchester lever gun chambered for 40-82 Winchester.

Is there any source of ammunition for really odd and unusual cartridges such as this?

It'll be pretty easy to reload for. Just like any of the old black powder cartridges. You can form the cases from .45-90 brass.

"...any source of ammunition for..." Buffalo Arms, Stateside. Don't think they have a Canadian distributor though. .40-82 BP ammo from them runs $76US per 20.
Bertram brass runs $68.95Cdn per 20 from Shooter's Choice in Waterloo, Ontario.
OWS(Old Western Scrounger) sells loads 240 grain lead ammo at $59.95US per 20. They're listing one box. Ten-X also loads it at $79.99US per 20. Epp's is the Canadian distributor for both.
Epp's is the place to start when looking for anything unusual. Just won't be inexpensive.

You might also want to point your friend to Mike Venturino's book "Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West". It has some useful info on the .40-82 including a couple of loads, and is a good book to read regardless.
