I finely finished a 40 cal flintlock that I started a few years ago. It has a really nice swamped Rice barrel, it has great balance and weight. The wood was really plain in the white but after aquafortis some figure showed through. I really like the look of it. I still have to make a peep sight for it otherwise it is ready to go. When the weather warms it needs to go to the range.

The barrel was slow rust brown. Coat with browning, let rust 12 hours, card with extra fine steel wool, repeate about 20 rounds. Small scews, springs, nitre blued with salt peter at 310 C in lee casting pot, casehardened the lock plate and ####. Wood was aquafortis. Wipe on aquafortis, let dry, use heat gun to turn brown, put on tung oil, rub oil in briskly with maroon abrasive pad, wipe off let dry. Rub in polymerized tung oil, 1 coat per day, sand with 600 grit wet and dry between the last 4 coats. I did about 15 coats. Final coat was Osmo oil (wax/oil/varnish) to give it more water protection.

I shot the 40 today for the first time. It is a very nice caliber. Virtually no recoil, very accurate. I always heard that small calibers foul badly but this rifle loaded easily and cleaning was a breeze. I think I am really going to enjoy this rifle.

if you card with wet 0000 steel wool, I think you will find it requires less repeat rustings because the steel wool is less aggressive than dry steel wool
