Could the 7.62x54r of the mosin negant be necked to take a .405 diameter bullet? Would re boring leave enough barrel thickness or would a new barrel be needed?

The normal Mosin Nagant barrels seem a bit thin for reboring to a round that size. Not saying it couldn't be done, just that they aren't a very thick barrel to begin with (would definitely have to do some measurements).

A new barrel would likely be cheaper than a re-bore.Perhaps a take off barrel re-chambered? Harold

Yes I know. It was mentioned to use a 9.3x57 Mauser instead of a mosin to get a better rifle. Which I agree is true but I wasn't sure that necking the 57 case to fit a 40 cal bullet would leave enough shoulder. That's why I thought of using the mosin. That way if it didn't work out I'm only out the price of a barrel really. Mosins can still be found pretty cheap

Wasn't there a 45-70 myosin on the internets somewheres, obviously involved a rebarrel, but perhaps there is candidates, I found a 45-70 barrel off a lever action looked brand new for $100, but it's likely too small diameter to thread to the mosin
