40 SW major load for IPSC

Not too sure if there is another thread on this already or even if I should have posted it in the competition forum but I want to pick some brains on various loads. I am current loading campro 180 RN with 4.6 grains of titegroup and it is on the line for making major. I wanted to know what you all thought about shooting BDX or even xmetal projectiles and would like some input on how people like the xmetal coating compared to copper. Also what powder? I like titegroup because it is cheap but it seems to be a bit dirty and have a quick burn rate. I have been thinking about changing to cafe pistol or vv320. Also any input on OALs would be great. I shoot a Tanfoglio limited custom extreme. Just interested to get some new ideas :cool:
 
WSF, Titegroup, and N320 seem to be the standards for .40 major.

Not a lot of Standard shooters in Alberta these days, and I bet you very few, if any shoot Xmetal.

If you’re interested in trying polycoat, JTT is based out of Sundre and would deliver to any match. Top provincial finishers are running plated, or JTT.

Hey thanks. I did message JTT and they are going to bring some 40sw 180gr to the next Edmonton match.
 
OAL is determined by your magazine and chamber.

Load a bullet long and push it into the barrel (take the barrel out of the pistol). It should pick up rifling marks.

Seat a bullet deeper and try again. Keep doing this until the bullet comes out with no marks. Make a note in your log book. This is the MAX OAL for your pistol (assuming it is short enough to fit in the magazine).

If there are feeding issues, you may need a shorter OAL.

Ignore the reference to OAL in the literature. That refers to THEIR pistol. Who cares?

Is your TiteGroup load not enough to make PF. If not, add another 0.2 gr and measure that.

The hotter the load, the cleaner the powder burns.

If you want clean, buy N320.

You don't need to find the exact bullet brand. CamPro/BDX will load like plated/FMJ and Xmetal/JTT like the multitude of coated bullet brands they use in the US.
 
Out of my Tanfoglio:

4.6gr TiteGroup, Campro 180grn RN @ 1.172" gets me right on 170PF which is too close for me so my current load is 4.7gr Titegroup for a little more buffer room.
