.40 vs 9mm

Some really good info thanks alot gents. I have a good spot for a good price on the pistol, and wolf seems like a good bet to get ammo in bulk. I will also see what I can do about getting some brass somewhere along the way. Do you guys know any decent places for me to look for reloading kits (never reloaded before), or where to get .40 to .9mm conversion kits for the glock 22? Sorry for the 20 questions - you guys just seem to be a wealth of information though!

Getting the same model of pistol that you use on the job will make your practise with it directly relevant to shooting your service pistol. This could help you to be a better shot with your service pistol.

Getting a different model of pistol will give you a more varied experience of shooting and help you to identify what helps in shooting generally and what helps specifically in shooting your service pistol. This could help you to be a better shot with your service pistol.

You're going to end up shooting all kinds of guns. No need to get the same one as for work. With enough time you'll be a great shot with any pistol. Get what you like. Chances are it won't be the last gun you buy. You'll have a collection very soon.

From what I've seen .40 is about $2 to $3 a box more for factory ammo.

But a 9mm has enough recoil that if you are already shooting it well then you'll shoot .40 just fine but it'll jump a little more. And by "shooting it well" this means you've gotten over the flinch issues and your hands support the pistol in a stable manner and ONLY your trigger finger moves while the others maintain the exact same force on the grip of the gun. Once you're in this zone it won't matter if they stick a .22, a 9mm, a .40 or a .45 into your grip since you'll treat the guns all the same.

The only real need to go with .40 is if you're going to shoot IPSC, IDPA or practice like you're in such matches where you double tap the target AND you want these match experiences to most closely replicate your work gun. In that case you want the same gun if you're looking to get better with that particular setup. And if you reload don't try to minimize the recoil. Stick with factory or near factory powers so you're consistent with your work gun so the feel is the same and your timing will serve you if you ever need to draw and shoot it in your defense.

Ask your duty sergeant if you can take your work gun to the range. If he will allow it, and many do I would stick to practicing with the 40 and forget about the 9mm.

Then if you want to get a 22 for plinking etc. then there are a number of options for you, including a 22 conversion for your .40 (if it is a Glock). But as stated above, the conversion kit for a Glock will cost you about $500, so you would likely be better off buying a separate gun.

Many LEO's get permission to use their duty pistols to practice at ranges. I know of a couple of TPS cops that used their duty pistol for IPSC matches.

For the marginal difference in the price of 40 vs 9 I would stick to practicing with the gun that I use in my work. You never know when under stress you may have to rely on "muscle memory" to save your life or those of others.

If your duty sergeant will not allow you to use your service pistol, I would purchase an identical one (Glock 22 I am assuming) for practice.

The major Glock dealer, Police Ordinance had their affiliate Tactical Ordinance have great deals on Glock 22s for LEOs. Tactical Ordinance is a member of this board. His username is Arwen Ace. You can contact him for a price on Glocks if that is your preference.

Question for you guys: I have shot the 22 quite a bit, but have never shot a 17 or any 9mm for that matter. Is there much of a difference in the way the gun feels/behaves?

No, and there is not much difference between the "little Glocks" either.... i.e. the Model 27 [.40 cal] or Model 26 [9mm], although the 27 torques a bit more in the hand.

NAA.

I'm a leftie too but I'm cross-eye dominant so I suppose I'm a freak. I think I will go with the glock 22 - thanks for all your input guys. You've also given me a few good places to look where I can get .40 x 1000 for a decent price.

As far as taking a duty pistol to a non-police range I would just prefer not to. Some people might let it happen, but IMO its just better to use police gear at police facilities and my own gear at civilian ranges.

As far as who is the deity of the police work, there are so many layers above me that it doesn't do me any credit to think about it. Bottom of the totem pole I am! :)
