So a friend has a 40 year old mossburg shotgun that their dad bought from sears. plugged to 3 rounds, blued metal and wood stock and foregrip.

It works, nice smooth action on it but I want to be sure what shot to use in it. It is a full choke barrel. steel and lead shot fair game? I know not to put slugs in it.

If made in 1971, that's before steel shot. Check with Mossberg to be sure, but most likely not recommended. Large steel shot like BB and above, will damage both the forcing cone and the barrel just ahead of the choke. The damage is generally tiny and incremental - you could shoot a few shells of large steel shot without apparent damage. But it's cumulative. A gunsmith may tell you to even open it up to IC, and lengthen the forcing cone.
