My hunting buddy is looking for a 350-400$ hunting scope with the biggest 'Wow' factor out there; clearest resolution possible... I told him it takes at least 500$ with taxes to get in the 'wow' factor territory like a Zeiss Terra for example. Am I wrong about that though, is there a 350-400$ solid scope that will wow most hunteres when they look through it?

It's got to be 3-9 x40-50mm

The "wow" will depend a lot on what he is used to. I always thought the biggest "wow" per dollar was the ScopeChief series of scopes. I would also agree with the bushnell elite 3-9x40 ... but I have not looked through a Sightron so couldn't compare

The elite 4200's were supposed to be better glass(from the Bosch and Laumb days) than the new elites. There's a 2.5-10x50 on the EE right now for $350. It even has the firefly reticle.

Tell you buddy to look into a quality fixed power. All sorts of wow factor; but you're still not coming in at 350 bucks. A 6X FX111 or dig around and find a used S&B 6 power for some Holy **** factor. I'd rather pay the extra for higher end variables and take the versatility, but there is no denying that the HFF is more obtainable in a fixed.

Scope sight picture is just a fraction of what you should be looking for in a scope.
Anti Fog, durability (especially if being used on a higher powered rifle), holding of zero, consistency, lifetime warranty and support from manufacturer etc

Buying a scope based on nothing more than wether it has a clear view is like buying a car based on the colour. Do much research.

I'm a Redfield guy myself but that's just me :D

I would stick to a plain tried and tested Leupold VX2 3-9x40 with a duplex reticle. It's simple, rugged and if it breaks anytime, he has great warranty support, though there's a good chance he won't need it. The "WOW" factor is no worse than any other scope in that price range and you're not spending extra on gimmicks like funky reticles/turrets/parallax adjustment, etc.
For 99% of hunting with 99% of calibers from 0-500 yards, you don't need anything else and would be hard pressed to find something better.

4200s in 2.5-10 are my favorite "cheap" scope. I have never had one fail, but if one ever does Bushnell is only a 20min drive from my house to get an on the spot, over the counter exchange. That right there is enough for me to buy more Bushys
