400 Whelan or 411 Hawk

Speaking of 350RM, I saw one today at a gun show in a 600 Mohawk. A bit lively for me.

I concur, mine is a 700 Classic, tamer but still not tame. Necked up to 400, it would be a real mans caliber. I've fired cast in the 416 Rem Mag, seemed just as intense a full power 30-06 load. IMHO cast bullets are the way to enjoy the bigger calibers to keep in practice.

On the list for me is working out cast loads for the 350 RM.

I recall doing some research on a 400 Whelen because it intrigued me. But after reading about head space problem because of the shoulder I gave up on it.
A good man on a good lathe making tight tolerances may solve this issue now a days.
I mean they can headspace rimless stait wall cartridges now.

Good luck, would be a great hunting rifle for serious game.

A major point to this is to use the common 30-06 brass, but a solution to the headspace problem (if indeed there is one), could be to use 9.3X62 brass which is slightly larger in diameter and capacity. 9.3-400X62

In fact if 9.3X62 brass was scarce, you could use 30-06 brass which upon firing would fill out the slightly larger chamber. Many people use 30-06 brass for their 9.3X62, myself included, and have posted the results here on CGN.

I think you just described the 411 hawk-scoville

400 Andy sounds better anyways

But what would I then name the other 50 "Vanity" cartridges I can "design" in the next hour? I'll "improve" existing cartridges a couple of thou here, couple of degrees there and I'll have them optimized for say a 23.6" barrel at 18 Celsius.

Had to look them up...

I satisfied my .40 cal. itch with these three: .40-60 Maynard, (brass is easily made from .30-40 Krag or .303 BR.) .40-65 Win and .40-70 Sharps Straight. (Cases are made from .405 Win brass) All are gentle to shoot, easy to load and are accurate with the 400 gr Snover cast bullet. As a bonus, all can be loaded with BP!
PS: If it can't be killed with either of these cartridges........it's too tough to eat!!!!

If I bumped my head in the shower and staggered out thinking I needed a 400 caliber or thereabouts I would just build a 416 Taylor and call it good. Did it as a matter fact. Have the reamer if anyone is interested in building one.
IIRC Remington Jim built one with my reamer.

Yes Sir ! and i was just out shooting it the other day ! Weatherby Vanguard action - Bob Jury #5 contour SS
22.5 " barrel - B&C Stock - Timney Trigger - B&L 1.5-6 Scope = Total 9 Lbs ! Horn 400 gr DGX over IMR4320 powder = 2425 FPS !
I'm gonna get a BRAKE installed on it for Bench test shooting as its a BIT Lively ! RJ

Easy to form brass- I just run 458 Win mag thru a full lenght size die and they fit perfect ! I did buy some Jamieson 416 Taylor head stamped brass for hunting loads !
