I have a new 22-.250 remington on order. The barrel is going to have a 1:14 twist that should be good for lighter bullets. I would like to have a load that will shoot right around the 4000fps mark. I know barnes claims this with the varmint grenades but do any of you guys have any real life experience with this? I would also like to keep it a 40 gr bullet if possible.

CFE-223 powder and a 40gr bullet will get damn near 4400fps out of my 22-250's

Many other powders will get to 4k+ with a 40 bullet.

For a while I wanted all the speed I could get out of mine. Some spectacular consequences for sure. Now I use 55 grain bullets exclusively.

It doesn't matter how fast you miss them.

I know speed isn't everything but for the last couple years i just want to break the 4000fps mark. Not sure why. i just wanna go fast. It will be months before the rifle arrives so thinking about this kinda stuff keeps me occupied for the wait. I have only used 52's and 55's in my current 22-250.

i am trying some in my savage mod 12 vlp 22-250 with a 1-9 twist and 70 gr berger and 39 gr of superformance i will hopefully see how it goes next weekend.

Trade your 22-250 off on a 220 Swift, lol. :)
I have always made 4000+ in the Swift with 50/52 grain pills, and there are a raft of these to choose from.

I think using a 40 grain bullet in a bigger case like the 225 Winchester, 224 Weatherby, 22-250 or 220 Swift
is somewhat counterproductive, since they tend to shed velocity at a higher rate.

I am not overly impressed with Superperformance powder in my SAUM, but results will vary, I'm sure.

Regards, Eagleye.

everything ive read about the "varmint grenades" has been negative.... IMO, there are alot better bullets out there to choose from.

I can't recall ever reading one positive thing about these bullets.

Superformance powder only works with certain bullets, ie 95 grain sst bullets in 243 travel at 3185 fps, but in a 308 150 grain, superformance is nothing special. I have not tried it in a 22-250.

Breaking the 4000fps mark is a goal of mine as well; just for laughs. Don't really have anything capable of it at the moment but I am eyeing a Savage .22-250 for longer range varminting/target shooting that would fit the bill.

I've read that they are just fine for shooting steel at close range but fail to perform on actual varmints.

I load 43grs of Superformance behind a 55gr NBT for my Rem VLS 22-250 and it will regularly shoot 5 shot 100yd groups that I can cover with a dime. I have not chorny them but they do turn gophers into a cloud of red mist.

i use a good shot of win 760 with a 40 grain bullet in my 22-250 .i have chronied it at over 4000 fps .

I've chronied winchester white box 45 grain and they were an honest 4000+ fps, with just a few fps variation. 4000 fps was the minimum, btw. And they shoot about 1/2" out of my stevens 200. Got all set up to reload 22-250 and they found this out and have only been shooting these...
