405gr lead 45-70 loads

Although not 4198, my go to load for the 45-70 has always been 42.0gr of Reloader 7 with a 405gr RCBS gascheck hard cast. It clocks in at about 1600 fps depending on the bbl length and will fold anything from mice to moose without even breaking a sweat and pass throughs are close 100% so don't expect to recover any. I have had a dozen or so 45-70's over the years and this load has never been picky in any rifle I have owned. This load worked for me, but I would work my way up to it if I were you to be safe.

30gr of IMR 4198 should put you just over 1300fps. That's a good plinking load for me. I've actually used this load with the Missouri 405gr.
33-35gr should put you in the 1400-1500fps range with a nice moderate recoil. I've tried this load and I've read about lots of people using this load range in their guide guns and for hunting deer, elk and black bear. Anything past this and you'll want to start thinking about a gas-checked bullet though.

Thanks, that's kinda what I'm looking at just a fun easy load to play with. I've got some 325gr tsx and short hornady brass to play with too but I'm fro that separately since i hear swapping between lead and jacketed bullets can be a bear to clean. Any truth to this?

I've put ~30 rounds of Speer 400gr and Sierra 300gr Jacketed bullets through my rifle in the last month or so and I could see significant copper in the barrel. Not sure how much worse it is when switching from lead to jacketed since I've always just cleaned the bore after every 20 rounds or so and never had an issue.

Very nice. What was the distance? Any filler required with Unique? Ever used Red Dot with your 405gr ?

Still trying to buy my first 45-70 single shot. Regret not buying this particular one at a March gun show.

That was a 100 yards never put any filler in it and no i’ve Never used red dot I was a little hesitant using unique at first but now I’m hooked.

I use ‘the load’ which has been around for years.
It works well with my 45-70.
Accurate with no Dacron or filler needed.
The load is 13 grains of Alliance Herc red dot pistol powder.
I use a 405 grain hardcast bullet with no gas check.
No leading.
This is not a legacy firearm load ... use with Marlin 1895 or stronger firearm.

How much pressure would this be ? Could a 1974 repro sharps handle this ?
