Mods, please move if this is not the right place.

There is a group buy sign up for a 2-cavity 41 long colt bullet mould on Cast Boolits http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=155753

New moulds for this bullet don't show up very often. This is a quality hollow base mould at a very reasonable price from MP Moulds, one of the top custom mould makers in the world. It probably won't be repeated in our lifetime.

The mould doesn't get on production schedule until about 15 people have signed up, then it will take 6-8 months. It's easy to get in on, PM me if you have questions about joining the group buy.

there have been a couple people contact me for more info, here it is.

To sign up for a group buy on "Cast Boolits" forum,
1. join the forum.
2. you make a post in the thread and say you want to be put on the list abd give your email address.
3. follow the instructions in the thread about payment - in this case the manufacturer will simply send you a (FRAUD ALERT) invoice when the mould is done
4. pay the (FRAUD ALERT) invoice and 1-2 weeks later your mould shows up.

It might take 6-8 months or more to get the mould because the manufacturers are that far behind in orders. But it is worth the wait.

The old single cavity Lyman moulds haven't been made for years. When they show up on ebay they routinely go for $150-$200, and that is for a used single cavity mould which is a PIA to use. The new MP mould is a double cavity with captive pins. It will cost approx US$100 plus $20 shipping. This is really a no-brainer.

Anybody who wants to get a mould but doesn't want to go thru the hassle of joing the group buy on the other forum - just send me a PM, I will add one to my order and you can get it from me at cost when (if) they get made.

Is it modeled after the Lyman? I prefered the Rapine myself when I cast, had a nice deep hollow with captive pin. I briefly owned an NEI double cavity .41 Colt with captive pins, a lot quicker to cast but a PITA to deal with the manufacturer and the mold had a few issues. This sounds like a great deal, too bad I don't shoot .41 Colt anymore or I'd be all over this.

It's modelled after the Lyman hollow base but has been modernised a bit, slight changes to the lube grooves to make it drop from the mould easier. I have one of the lyman moulds. It's a pia to use. I just started using the MP moulds with captive pins and i won't ever go back to the lyman type voluntarily. They are that good.

Are you going to offer the bullets for sale once you get the mold ? just hard to find good 41 LC bullets. I get alot of guys asking me for a sorce of good 41 lc bullets.
Also i wanted to know if they would work in the 41 Rf home made ammo my guess they would be a tad heavy for the 41 rf ammos.
I have a 41 Cal Round ball mould made in england but would prefer real bullets that will work.

Can the mold be adapted to cast a shorter lighter bullet?

I don't think this mould could be easily adapted to throw shorter bullets. The hollow base gets in the way.

COTW says 41 rf factory cartridge used a 163 gr bullet but doesn't say whether it is a heeled bullet. If it's not a heeled bullet then a custom mould isn't so hard to get.

If it's a heeled bullet then the options shrink a bit. I have some heeled flat base 200 gr 41 LC bullets from a lyman mould, but they are heavier than you'd want on the 41 rf. These have a .386" heel and a .403" main body. If you're only making a few it shoud be do-able to cut a bit off the nose and reshape with a file or rasp. .41 rimfire bullets would be an interesting project.

The shorter .41Rf was most likely a heeled bullet. When I had a couple .41 Colt pocket pistols I chopped the nose off the bullets on my 185gr cast Rapine and got to around 160gr and they JUST fit in the cylinder. There is a thread on it somewhere.

btt - there must be some more people interested in a .41 Long Colt mold? Sign up on the group buy at Cast Boolits; or post here or PM me to indicate your interest or ask questions. :)

--BUMP--

Anyone that wants a .41 long colt mold should sign up at the link is in the start of this thread. We passed 15 orders so it's going on the schedule. Probably be a year but it doesn't cost anything to get put on the list and you can pull out any time if you change your mind.

I ordered mine from Bernie at old west bullet molds or something like that years ago. I was to spec and I had it inside a month. This waiting has been going on two years.

If you don't want it then don't order it. But don't compare this MP mold with the Old West Mold because they aren't even close.

The 41LC mold I'm using now is from Bernie at Old West Molds. It is a single cavity with the antiquated Lyman style HB pin that is painfully slow to use. This mold has machining marks in the cavity that I spent 4 hours polishing and it's still far from perfect. The last couple molds I got from Old West Molds have been like that.

The MP mold is a double cavity with a captive pin system making it at least 4 times as fast as the Old West 41LC mold for about the same price. The cavities on an MP mold are extremely well finished. MP is one of the top custom mold makers in the business and his molds are works of art.

There probably won't ever be another run of MP Molds in 41 LC. The group buy participants on Cast Boolits has been warned that the cutoff is coming and cherries are ordered. This is a one-time opportunity.
