410/22 o/u recommendations gimme your opinions

I have had the Savage 24s and I am not happy with any! For what you have to pay for two single shot guns,you can get a good 22 and still have $$ for a Mossberg 410 pump. Remember this is JMHO!
 
I've had the Savage 42 and a Double Badger, sold the 42 and keep the Badger. Both are nice but I liked the Double Badger better.
 
I too agree with the double shooters verses the over under combo.
I've owned a few of those and they don't seem to stick around here.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I like the idea of having the combo but a pump 410 might work for me too.
I am seriously looking for a double badger and was hoping to find a used one. I have read several reviews but they seem very mixed on whether it is a good gun, the negative reviews focus on poor fit and finish from what I see. Anyone with hands on opinions about the badger please give me your sense of it.
 
Have had a Savage 22/410 for a long time. The new ones look like toys and have no appeal to me. Mine is pre 1964 (they have no serial #'s) and was my go to grouse gun for decades. I bought her sometime in the late 80's and she had not had a box of shells through her. I use a 16 ga sxs now but my Savage rides in my truck for grouse season. Very short and easy to pack in the spruce jungles where I live. I briefly toyed with the idea of trading it but glad I did not. If you want a 22/410 O/U look for an older Savage, they are worth the money.
 
I have no experience with the older Savages... but would probably echo the above statement.

I do have a double badger. Had to send the first one back as the extractor was perma-jammed. Got a replacement. I do like the wood stock, but fit & finish is 'economy' grade. Shotgun works well and I bagged a few grouse with it last fall, including one on the wing. The 22 shoots way high. Even with sights adjusted to the full extent, it's 8" high at 50 yards and maybe 2" at 100 yards. not very useful
 
I would recommend staying away from the new savages, they really are junk. Like bland said try and find an older one that's where the quality is. I bought a new bakail last year and it's decent, not perfect but decent.
 
My double badger works well, good sights and both shotgun and 22lr barrel shoot to the same POI at around 20m. The only things I don't like is that I can't handle 22lr loading and extraction with gloves on and the trigger guard is tight for gloves. In cold weather I just use the 410 barrel due to the problem handling 22lr with gloves on.
 
Well you have given me lots of good feedback on these and I went and handled a double badger at the Renfrew gun show along with a Baikal over under 410. The o/u was by far the better finish but yes I think I still want the combo of the double badger. I do have to say it could use quite a bit of improvement on the quality and finish, brand new out of the box it had a split in the stock just behind the trigger guard and the wood on the forearm had sharp points at the back which stuck out and I can see them splintering very easily. I would give it about a 6 out of 10 quality wise. So maybe I will have to be patient and holdout for an older savage as suggested?

Not a fan of mod 42...I had the savage 24. Definitely nice gun and there's few different varieties. If If i were you I'd wait for a good deal to come about. They aren't 600 dollar gun so be patient. I bought two one here on EE and one at gun show. They were 22mag/20ga version 450/475 price range. 410 should be about there or bit less. Good luck. If not the Then buy Baik al which I find is bit heavy or go separate guns for both calibres. For that money you can get nice old cooey guns and load of ammo. Lots of other options out there as well. I mean combo is nice but I find its overpriced.
 
I paid $550 for my savage 24 in 22/20 ga and I dont regret it one bit. I handled the new 42 and found it felt like a toy. I also handled the Baikal and chiappa double badger which I liked both of them but still like the old savage 24 better.
