You can put a 410 shotgun shell in your 45-70 and it will go bang. The 410 is only 41 calibre, compared to the 458 of the rifle. Therefore, very little pressure will be raised and the shot will rattle down the bore, much of it getting deformed by the rifling, and exit at a speed that you would not want to get in the way of. If you try shooting it at a plain piece of large paper, you will see that it would be useless for hunting at any normal range one would expect of the 410.
