Looking to acquire a full size 410 for Grouse and fun - have a backpacker already. Can get the usual IGA in the $130 - 150 range (have a 20 guage IGA and really like it) but am interested in something a bit more interesting. I like older guns.
I see that Epps have a Stevens 58b, bolt action with a clip that seems intersting, anybody have any comments/experience with that?

I have a mossberg bolt action 410, love it for grouse and rabbit at close range using 3" #6. I did get rifle sights put on it and plan on sighting in slugs in case a yote comes by my path while out for small game.

Fox, I have a 20 ga Mossy bolt and was toying with the idea of putting rifle sights on it. How exactly did you go about it and approximately what did it cost? As far as the Stevens bolt 410, never tried one, but many of the Mossbergs have poly-chokes (mine has interchangeable tubes), and also have the detachable mag and go for about the same price as the Stevens. If the fixed choke isnt a problem and the price is good though, go for it.

I had the local gunsmith drill for the front sight and cut a dovetail for the rear. He was not too keen about drilling for the rear sight as the walls of these shotguns are not too thick, with the higher pressure near the chamber I understand the concern and went along with his idea. The cost was $15 per hole and $35 for the dovetail, so 1 hole for the front sight and $50 in total. It took a while to get it done as this was not too important on my part. The gun feels like a very light rifle now, in a pinch I know those 410 slugs could be used for deer within 40 yards.

Slugs and Adjustable choke for 410

I have a bolt action 410 and would like to try slugs, however it has an adjustable choke. I know nothing about adjusting this and would like to know how it should be set if I try slugs.
It may be a stupid question but my other guns are the LOAD POINT and SHOOT type.
Cheers

Slugs out of an sdjustable choke I have not done, mine has screw on chokes. It should not be a problem and you would most likely get the best results with improved choke, but I would talk to a gunsmith and see if it is safe to shoot slugs out of that particular choke.
