.410 Cal Pump Shotgun

I have a .410 single shot that I use occasionally but I find that it limits my shots on grouse to the ones that don't fly. I take it when I am just going for a walk. I usually use my 16 gauge sxs when I take the dog out to flush them.

Mossberg 500 .410 pump is the only new gun I've ever purchased and I love every minute of it. I've slain a ton of grouse with it, I don't think I've ever hunted grouse with anything but a .410. I used to use an old bolt action with a built in magazine that jammed all the time but this pump is amazing. If I can offer one piece of advice with it, although I'm sure you know this already, don't baby it when you're cycling. slam it back and slam it forward, the only time I've been stuck is when I'm looking for the second bird and don't move the action fast enough. Enjoy!

I shot a Win 101 .410 for years for skeet. Also carried it for partridge on moose hunting trips. With a skeet choke for birds it is a close range gun as in 12 yds and under with hand loaded copper plated #6's. Weigh out 1/2 oz of #6s (lead) and count the pellets, can't remember the exact count but there is not a lot. Had more luck with 6's than 7 1/2's. Father-in -law had a Win. M-42 full choke in a 3" chamber, also used #6's and it was much more lethal out to about 25yds for birds. The 3" with the extra shot capacity over a 2.5" makes a notable difference
Any hit with a .410 must be right on as there is little to no margin any error. When using a .410 cut down the range of your shots and you will be more successful with less cripples.
Always regretted selling the 101. I use a Ithica double 20 ga. now for partridge and it does a dandy job.

I have an old Cooey single shot 410 and it is one of my favourite guns. The .410 is just a cool round and although it has limited purpose it is very good at what it is good at. My first time hunting I borrowed a buddies Mossberg Lakefield pump 410 and fell in love with it. I am holding out for a nice lever action and might splurge on one if one were ever to come up for sale. I also have a bit of a soft spot for a Mossberg 410 bolt.

The pump I used was extremely reliable and I never had a problem with it

The 410 calibre is very misrepresented in my opinion, you either love it or hate it?
This gauge and I use that term Loosly, is a niche gun period !
I love it, my father ,brother, nephews, uncles and myself been using this gauge for grouse hunting in NW Ontario. The reason it works here, as we are chasing grouse threw thickly wooded old logging roads, the only time there flying is through the underbrush, there is no wing shooting or flushing partridge in my neck of the woods!
So before you crap on the lowly 410, remember you should use the proper tool for the job :)
You can never have too many 410's in my opinion, I have a few:)
Win 42 3" full choke
Rem 11-48 skeet choke
Win 9410 jug choke
Ithica SXS F/M choke
Would love to find a beautiful single back action English made 410!
Cheers dale Z!
