.410 choke recommendation?

I've acquired a .410 double that I'll mostly be using for cottontail hunting. Its choked full/full. I normally hunt bunnies with a more open choke, but seeing as its a .410, should I leave the chokes alone or have them opened up?

I have a Mossberg .410 choked full, I am going to have it opened to modified or light modified. With a double I would say your best bet would be to keep one choked full and get the other opened to skeet or Improved cylinder. Full and Improved should cover all your bases. If you typically hunt close, maybe go Improved modified and skeet. I like my .410 because it is light and fast,I am able to get on birds and targets noticeably fasterat closer ranger and at close range the full choke is a handicap.

Before I did anything I would pattern it and see what the existing chokes do. Then decide if opening them will make the difference you want.

Most or all .410 shotguns are choked full for good reason - full choke on a .410 will throw a lighter pattern at 20 yds than an improved cyl choked 12 ga at the same distance, because the .410 shell has much less shot than a 12 ga shell does. Full x full works good in a .410. double.

I would try it and if you actually find a problem in the field (you won't) then get 1 barrel opened up to mod. There's no use in messing with something until you find an actual problem. "If it isn't broke don't fix it".

Jethunter,

Thanks! Good advice (I think). I'm pretty sure that I understood your post correctly, although I must say that I found it very difficult to read as for some reason I could not keep my eyes on the words ;):D

Jethunter is right! We use 410 full/full to do head shots on ptarmigans and spruce grouse way North as they don't fly. There are not that many pellets in 1/2 oz of shot!

Henry;)

Leave the chokes as they are.In the .410 for hunting, full is the best choice in my opinion. In the past I used a Winchester Model 42 .410 .The .410 works okay but is in my opinion far behind the 28 gauge.

I would certainly pattern first ....

IIRC, 410's are typically patterned at 25 yards, not 40 for pattern percentage... thus a "FULL" choke 410 should put about 70 percent of it's shot charge in a 30" ciecle at
25 yards.... about right I'd say for the capabilities of this gauge, given the limited amout of shot in it's payload.
