Looking to load some light loads for for a new shooter in a youth .410. Looking for low recoil.


Magtech2.5” brass shell
Federal 410 wads
Overshot wads
No 6 steel shot
Large pistol primers for the brass shells

For powders that look in the right burn rate. I’ve got access to

Long story on how I came to acquire this odd assortment of components.

Hopping to load about 1/2 ounce of shot to fill the case. Looking for suggestions particularly on powder charge.
 
I see two major issues with your plan:

1) 410 uses extremely slow burning powders like H110 and lilgun to keep pressures acceptably low. You'll only find full power data since this is the only way to reliably ignite such slow powders. It's unlikely you'll find "light" load data.

2) Steel shot requires special wads with thicker shotcup walls to avoid barrel damage, the Fed 410 wad is only designed for lead shot.
 
I don't think you will get a proper gas seal using Federal .410 wads if you are using MagTech brass as the internal dimension of tge brass case is larger than a plastic shotshell. When I loaded brass. 410 , the fiber wads I ysed were larger diameter .

I’m only trying to do like 10 rounds to test the recoil. I can understand the steel shot. So I’ll pull some 7.5 lead shot loads to make these.

Is the wad issue a a danger or just a not ideal don’t expect good accuracy?

The issue is that Smokeless powder needs substantial compression to build the pressure needed , so the wads have to fit tighter than the plastic wads in the brass case. Otherwise you will end up with "bloopers " on a regular basis .

When I started handloading 410 brass shells, google was my friend. There are quite a few guys working on this. If anything I found it hard to get heavy loads out of 2.5 inch brass while light loads were easy to make. If I recall correctly I used Alliant 2400. I got the wads and cards from Bilozir. I learned lots from a article from Ed Harris, "How-to-Make-and-Load-All-Brass-410-Shotshells"

I shoot brass exclusively in .410 and have tried a few different loads (smokeless and black). I use plastic shot cups (wads) with the smokeless but not with black. Regarding the fit, I use an over shot wad (cut from waxed cardboard milk carton) as an over powder wad under the plastic cup. For the record, MV with the over powder wad is 100fps faster than without so that is an indication of how much “blow by” there is with the poor fit of the plastic wad. Saw no discernible change in pattern or POI with or without the over powder wad

I also used tight overpower wads and a tight overshot wad with silicone sealant.
The velocity worked very well, I actually preferred the Smokeless loaded this way to the black powder velocities .
I never did usexshot cups with either load.
All my other gauges I oreffered to shoot black however .
