410 slugs for deer?

I spent about half a day once hitting very few of the grouse I was shooting at. Don't know how, but I got a whole bag of .410 slugs mixed up with my shotshells. Took the heads off one or two, but most I missed and had no idea why. .410 slugs will kill grouse, if you hit them in the head anyway.

Hey, BR, do you think it's wise to advocate testing bullet penetration by shooting at something with an obvious high ricochet possibility? I don't... ;) (Don't wanna give kids the wrong idea, do we?)
Good Point Monty. Although we shoot at steel targets and occasionally we shoot at propane cylinders I do take precautions.... I stand behind Darryl and shoot over his shoulder.

jus kidding... be careful. ;)

I don't understand the propane cylinder test. Is that supposed to replicate how a bullet would penetrate muscle and bone?
.410 is more than enough for deer. Just keep it under 50 yards. Due to the shape and composition of the foster slugs, they lose a lot of energy very fast. But 110gr HP at 1800fps would be very lethal at shorter ranges.

I still say I am going to try it some day but you better make sure exactly where the slug is going to hit and keep that range short. I have actually played with the idea of a 1/2oz slug (220gr) based on 1/2 oz game loads in 3". Depending on the pressure 1250fps might be possible and that might work well, on the other hand it might not, oh well something to do over the summer.

If you are gonna use it make sure everything is perfect, good luck with the testing.

And I've only been hit by a riccochet once too,
but thats another story.
Got hit by a 38 on my handgun requalls when i was an armed guard.
One hell of a bruise, and bloodblister that was like an extra head, but didnt penitrate the skin. Caught it on the left shoulder. I was lucky it wasnt the face. There was 6 of us on the line, so Im not sure who originally shot it.
I sitll have the slug, I should send it to CSI :D

You will get better penatration from a 22 LR than a 410 slug.
410's are good for small game at very close ranges (with shot). They make slugs, but there should be a disclaimer on them . Useless for anything larger than a 1lb propane cylinder. (they dont even penitrate them, its like shooting bowling pins)
So that should explain the effectiveness of it.

If you're going to keep it under 50yds anyways, then why not go to a nice, small Win '94 in 30-30 or some other similar light package?

I don't hunt deer, so I have no idea, but I sure don't like the concept of possibly maiming animals with experiments. Hope you guys are good shots with what you got, is all.:cool::)

..

have you not been paying attention?

the propane tank is *THE* most scientific way of testing a firearm/ammo for BEAR DEFENSE!!!!!!

Do bears frequently explode?

They do if they just ate your propane tank, and you want to be ready for that if it happens.

Haven't you seen jaws? Brodey would be DEAD if all he had was a 410.

I coulda sworn my hunting instructor said .410 slugs for deer hunting in ontario were illegal in anything smaller then 20Ga. Might wanna ask the MNR.

Either way if you use them good luck getting your deer. :D

I have asked the MNR office and they have said it is llegal to shoot deer using a 410 with a slug (SLUG ONLY) nothing eles  infact it is llegal in ONTARIO to use a 410 loaded with a slug to hunt BIG GAME

.

I leave my Barbeque Grill dirty and I will coat my extra propane tanks in Honey... just make sure that they are far enough away from the house.

Just an FYI. projectiles DO NOT riccochet very well off of a propane cylinder (probably because they are round) lead will usually deform enough to not be an issue and centerfire rifle/pistol ammo usually goes right through it.

I have only shot one but have seen a few at the range.
Nothing exploded either.

I also shot a 410 slug at 10 yds through a paper book... it made it halfway through. Not recommended for deer ... and to think I was palnning on using it for bear.

"...And in other news today, a helicopter pilot accidentally landed in a feild when he mistook a large red circle with a black spot in the center for being a new helipad. According to eye witnesses, a local resident who was responsible for the circle said to the confused pilot "That ain't paint son. By the way - want to see something cool? Where's the gas tank on that chopper?" Fire crews are still on the scene..."
