Dropping the bullet weight certainly helps, it's a heck of a difference. I had a #1 in 450-400NE I played with for a few yrs, ran cast in it with AA5744, 320gr instead of 400gr bullets, far nicer to shoot, still at 2100fps. There were 300gr jacketed bullets around for it as well, and 210gr pistol bullets. It was fun, learned a few things doing it. I can say, that with the rounds I put thru a gun I wouldn't have bought if I wasn't reloading, I saved enough versus the factory ammo for it, to pay for all the reloading gear I've ever bought. I do wonder if there are aa5744 loads for the 416, didn't need wads with it.

Trail Boss might also be useable w/o polyfil wad but muzzle speed would likely be alot lower than what I get with Re7.
Trail Boss definitely won't get you there, if you can even find any. When I got the info for the 450-400 from Western, they had jacketed loads for it too, all unpublished. Could check Hodgdon site and see what they show for AA5744, it's a pretty useful powder. I'd contact them if they don't show it, sure they have access to the unpublished Western info.

  • today checked 100m groups with 5 different .416 caliber bullets & Re7 all at ~2200 fps mv
  • figure this load should work fine for me for hunting
  • also checked 100m off hand accuracy set trigger nice feature
  • 350gr can be reduced to ~1800 fps mv ok accuracy using Alliant 2400
  • unexpected range guest Whitetail Doe️⚠️
