Took my CZ 550 out to the range today and fired some loads over the chrony. The loads were all using the 400gr Hornady RN

Started at 96grs, then 97grs and finally 98grs H4831 (3 rounds of each), Norma case, CCI250 primer.

Velocity for the 96gr load was 2323fps, and the 98gr load did 2420. Recoil was quite tolerable from the bench. Will try some RL22 next and see how it compares.

I'm pretty sure that I ended up with 103gr of H4831SC with 350 gr X bullets in my Rigby. Can't quite recall the end velocity, fairly relaxed though, but works like a hot damn. I think H4831 is the way to go in the Rigby. I think RL22 might be too slow.

My load is 96 grains of RL22 with the 400s. Velocity is right at 2350 with the softs, never bothered clocking the solids. 98 grains was a little warm leading to just a hint of sticky extraction on older cases.
The rifle will shoot 1'' 3s without effort, and nearly match that with 3 softs and 3 solids. Granted, accuracy doesn't mean much for this use but it was nice to get away from the bench quickly.

I think I am going to stay around the 2350fps mark. Just need to check for accuracy now. The big CZ is a pleasure to shoot, with very little muzzle jump.

Come on, be real men! The 416 Rigby is easily capable of 2600 fps. :D

The bullets themselves may have problems with the higher velocities on the heavy game/close range use the caliber was meant for. The 400 grain solids seem to whistle through elephants at 2350, hitting the ground harder on the other side wouldn't help much.:) Besides, if the shooter wants or can shrug off more recoil there are bigger calibers and heavier bullets to play with. If flatter trajectory is the object there are easier ways of getting there.

my CZ 550
Barnes 400 gr TSX, 100 gr H4831 : 2400 ft/s (bullet loaded slightly out)
Nosler Partition 400 gr, 99 gr H4831 : 2400 ft/s

Both to the same spot and both moa -- very nice recoil (to me anyways - one of my friends thinks otherwise LOL)

I don't own a 416 or any comparable caliber and will probably never own one as I just cannot justify the expense and will probably never have the opportunity to hunt anything big enough to suite the caliber.

But man, do I enjoy a threat like this about real guns (my personal opinion) as opposed to tactical or semi’s etc!
