416 Ruger who's got one?

416 Ruger alaskan

OK, so whats the deal. I have had four of these in my hands (mine and a buddies, plus the two that Ruger replaced them with!!) and all four failed/refused to cycle the only factory ammo available for them, i.e. the Hornady 416 rounds.

Have any of you other 416 owners actually tried to feed them Factory ammo, or are you handloading some different bullet style?

We arer still trying to resolve the 'Failure' with Ruger and I am trying to find out whether its a gun or an ammo problem. This gun/ammo is a joint venture between Ruger and Hornady. We were initially led to beleave that a few guns were made that exhibited this trouble, but that the deficiency was rectified by Ruger, and a kit was developed to remedy the problem. (this could only be some change to shape of the Magazine follower!)

Apparently some of the deficient rifles are still out there as opposed to being 'recalled'..(this makes no sense considering Ruger replaced our rifles with two that exhibit the exact same problem!!

I find it hard to believe that this can all be 'coincidence' that we would receive 4 deficient rifles, with 2 of them coming direct from the manufacturer as replacements for the ones we identified to have the problem in the first place.

Is this perhaps the reason that the .416 Ruger cal is NOT available in their 'Safari' model.?

Any gun that will not properly feed the only Factory ammo made for it is a major marketing 'Faux-pas' and I am beginning to suspect is just not being publicly acknowledged by Ruger so as to avoid having to correct the problem on guns already sold.!!!

I can't speak to the 416, but know of a local Alaskan Hawkeye in 375 that had the exact same problem, and was slated for replacement by Ruger last I heard.

All 4 don't feed from the magazine? Epic screw up with the rifle or the ammo.

What happens?

What shape of bullets are they?

My .375 RUger feeds cartridges like greased sausages:evil:

SInce it is all 4 of the rifles, I'm wondering about the ammo? You coudl try some .375 Ruger ammo, see if that feeds?

In the instance to which I'm referring, it would not feed the first and third cartridges from the mag. That was with all configurations of Hornady ammo.

I'm talking about the 416 RUgers 585 Nyati is having trouble with.

Maybe he coudl try some 375 RUger ammo, see if it will feed. See if the issue is the 416 ammo.

Longer cartridges feed better, pretty much always. My .458WM CZ-550 didn't feed well; lengthening it 1/4" to the Lott cartridge improved it immensely.

The .416 caliber is damn near the perfect anywhere-in-the-world cartridge, as Boomer says. There's a bunch of 'em to pick from. There's trade-offs in everything... IMHO the .416Rem is perfect.

Hornady and Ruger have collaborated on some really interesting projects the last few years, I hope they keep it up. But they have already dropped support for what I believe was their best offering; the .480 Ruger. I'm not real sure why.
Any rifle that doesn't feed reliably is a liability, especially in a cartridge designed for dangerous game. So time will tell on this cartridge. It'll sell itself... or fail...

My pal's .375 Ruger Alaskan feeds slick with any bullet syle I've loaded; spitzer, round nose, flat nose, hollow point doesn't matter. Sounds like a run of Rugers didn't get the Q/C they normally do.

416 ruger who's got one

I love my 375 Ruger it feeds all cartridges regardless of style slick and fast just like a fat kid at the cupcake counter! I agree that overall length maybe a factor.

No issues with feeding cartridges with my .416 Alaskan. The mag box feed lips do scratch the case a bit as it slids in. You can work the bolt slowly or as fast as you can. Maybe the ones having issues are too tight and the cartridge is binding against the lips and the feed ramp?
