Hi All,

I am in the process of forming brass for my 416 taylor. I know the normal route is to size down the 458 win mag case, but I am also considering sizing up the 338 win mag and the 300 win mag cases. Has anyone had any taylor brass forming stories they care to share?

I am using new never fired winchester brass that is nice and soft. I am using Lee 416 taylor dies. I know RCBS makes brass forming dies and base forming dies ($$$$$) but find that necking up the 338 win mag works very well with new case and have not had a failure yet.

I am also using Ken Waters load data for the 400 grain bullet. Anyone else have loads they care to share?

Thanks

From past experience with the 416 Taylor. Fireform 338 win mag brass using Bullseye or Unique along with cream of wheat and a small wad of tissue to prevent spillage in the action.
I found IMR 4320 and IMR 3031 to be ideal for the 410 gr bullet and have close to 100% loading density. No problem getting 2300 fps but near impossible to get 2400fps without excessive pressures or 110% loading density.
Even though it won't match 416 Rigby velocities sure killed well enough.

I have a can of unique on hand how many grains does one use to fire form?

I have not yet fire formed a case but I will with these.

Not sure what game I will chase with this rifle maybe moose or bear (black) I know neither need that much but it would be fun :)

Thanks

338 to 416 is a heck of a jump. Are you using intermediate expanders (.35 and .375) to make the transition easier? I would think that going straight from .338 to .416 would cause a high number of cases to be lost.

As RC said some unique, fill the 338 case with cream of wheat plug the neck with a wad of tissue , take to the range and make 50 cases in a few minutes. My old 416 talor always performed very well with IMR 4320 behind a 350gr speer or hawk, sure stomped bears well
fantastic caliber

Hawk will ship them to Canada,I've had no problems with shipping them. They are soft and make a big hole,I've found they work well if not pushed to fast, the 2200-2600fps range seems to work.

I used 78 grains of 4895 and a 300 X bullet and 72 grains with a 400

My redding dies had a tapered expander so with Imperial wax I bumped 338 WMs in one pass
