Hi all
Seeing if any of you have experience with the big 416 weatherby
I don’t know why I want one. But I do.
They are big, and odd, I am sure that not many Have one.
Recoil? Well not concerned about it. As i have a 72cal side by side that burns 200gr of black with a 550gr round ball. A 450 3 1/4” nitro in a ruger#1 that is spicy
375 and 338RUM
I have always loved the beautiful lines of weatherby deluxe rifles and how smooth they are.
Any tips? Bullets to stay away from?

Not the Wby but had a 416 Remington. You must really enjoy recoil. 400gr Partitions and 4064 is what I used. Didn't have it long!

The 416 rifles are a whole new world. Sharp powerful kick. Not like BP at all. I have a 416 Rem Mag and it shook the scope off in 17 rounds. Now I shoot it open sights and standing so I can roll with the recoil. My 470 Nitro is nicer than the 416 Rem Mag. The 416 Wby is another class above. This is when a "sissy" bag is reasonable. There is something about the case size and the 416 bores that just loves kicking hard. Of course the .378 Wby is the King of sharp hard recoil.

I build a 460 weatherby. It weighs 8 pounds 7oz. Recoil is stout but not bad with a recoil pad (limb saver). I dont try to take the whole force of the recoil. I let it push me around

Im going to rebarrel it to 416 wearherby though as its a prohib as 460. The receiver and mag are setup to feed and hold that size case so a rebarrel is the simplest fix for me
Then i can even use the same brass.

I build my 500 jeffery to be 10 pounds loaded. My 375 H&H is also 10 pounds. You may want near 10 pounds

In my younger years I used to love punishing my shoulder on the bench with the .416’s, in both rem and weatherby mags. I used the Rem much more as I remember the WM having a much “spicier” recoil than the large but straight push of the Rem.

I can’t tell you what bullets to avoid as it’s been so long but I don’t remember anything standing out as being bad. I did shoot a few whitetails and black bears with mine as well as an elk. Unless there are more bullets available now than back then they were not designed to open on smaller (relatively speaking) North American game of which they did not without hitting major bone. I shelved mine for hunting after some long track jobs opting for something with more hydrostatic shock.

Only tip I can really give is that if your going to mount a scope get one with huge eye relief and mount it as far forward as you can.

While I shy from heavy recoil now I did have lots of fun with mine. I always joked with my shooting buddies that didn’t appreciate my love of the big bores that I my rifles shot just under half inch, with every shot!

Let us know how you make out.

416 Rigby is good fun. Expensive to shoot, kicks pretty hard. Load it up with some 400 grain A-Frames and you are good to hunt just about anything that can be hunted. May take it to Africa. Have never seen a 416 Weatherby though.

I have a Factory Remington 700 in 416 Rem Mag. It is fairly light with an HS precision stock from factory. I was anticipating nasty recoil at the bench with some factory 400 A-frames but I was pleasantly surprised it was not as bad as I thought. The stock just fits me.... my handloads recoiled about the same. I have sat for 20 or less rounds when I have taken it out off bags using a thin limb saver shoulder pad.

Don’t get me wrong, it recoils but hold it tight and roll with the recoil and it is manageable. I would recommend a scope with long eye relief (Leupold) for hunting, as positions on the stock could lead to some pain... haha. Found that out with my 35 Sambar last fall.... first time I’ve ever scoped myself.

I assume you plan/already handload. Remember, you can load the Weatherby down to wussy (wink) Rem Mag velocities if need be. Enjoy the big bores. If I’m drawn for moose this year, mine may make an appearance.

Love mine, dropped a Cape Buffalo in it’s tracks with 2nd shot.
Used 400gr. Hornadys
slightly more kick than a 416 REM.- also dropped a Cape buffalo with it.- on 2nd shot.
Kick not noticeable on either occasion. Was slightly noticeable on the bench, sighting it in. Had a brake on both.
