.42 caliber

Hi. So I recently purchased a fixer upper and the listing said it was .42 caliber. I searched high and low for this caliber,but I cant seem to find it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Fixxer upper what? A muzzleloading rifle? Non-military muzzleloaders were made in a wide variety of calibers with little in the way of standardization.

If it is a cartridge gun, there were a few .42 cartridges, both rifle and pistol.

Provide as much info on the gun you can. Right now you trickle info..get it all out, pictures help.

I bought it because i thought it would be a nice rifle/shotgun once restored

Don't know what you mean by restored. The gun could benefit from some careful and respectful care. It could also be ruined by a ham handed approach.

Anyway, after the rifle bore has been cleaned carefully, the size of patched round ball could be determined. The bore size could be measured. A round ball slightly smaller than bore size could be tried with patching of different thicknesses until a nice fit is obtained.

I'm going to have one of the best gunsmiths in Ontario fix it for me. I wouldn't dare do it myself

Combination guns are interesting. I have two - an over/under rifle/shotgun combination, and a three barrel underhammer gun. SxS shotgun with rifle barrel beneath. The two barreled gun must have been made for someone a lot stronger than I am. It is long and heavy.
