I have a carbine and love shooting it. I'm using Hodgdon 777 in my loads and love it. It shoots really good, better than I expected. I just may have to bag a deer with it this season.

Cast of course. Mine like the 500gr best, but most guys use about 370gr. They aren't 45 cal, so unfortunately you can't use a common 45 cal mold or bullet. The bores are nominally 0.446", so 0.448" is probably what you'll need pending slugging your bore. For loads, Springfield Trapdoor loads are easy to find and even max loads are safe in the M71/84.
I'm using 350 grain hard cast , .446 bullets in mine and they shoot excellent. I never actually slugged the bore but that's what the guy I got it from used with no issues so that is what I continued using.
When reloading for the .43, use soft cast bullets with the proper Black Powder lube if you are planning to use Black Powder or substitute. It's a large case and smokeless powders like AA5744, Sr4759, and possibly Trail Boss, will also work, though there is no substitute for the "BOOM" of BP in the old guns.
